Publisher Bethesda Softworks and developer Arkane Studios officially announce the May release date for the companies’ forthcoming science fiction shooter, Prey.

Without a doubt, since nearly a decade has passed since the release of the original Prey, when Bethesda revealed the first trailer for Arkane Studios “reimagining” of the game during E3 2016, lots of fans’ eager excitement for the franchise’s eventual resurgence have translated to many avid gamers considering it to be one of the most highly anticipated video games of 2017. Now, both Bethesda and Arkane have given the series’ fans a day to be marked on their calendars, by officially providing a May 5, 2017 release date for Prey.

Bethesda Softworks made the announcement for Prey‘s release date by way of a new gameplay trailer that details more about the aliens and powers that can be found within the title. As seen below in the YouTube video from Bethesda, fans should expect plenty of action as they attempt to survive aboard the Talos I research facility in outer space, with the game’s protagonist wielding a variety of traditional weapons, such as a shotgun and pistol, in addition to more futuristic firearms like laser rifles and a Gloo Gun meant for sealing up dangerous leaks and sticking enemies in their place.

For those unaware, Arkane Studios’ reimagined version of Prey has been in production for quite some time, with the developer having begun creating the game about four years ago. As it happens, prior to its official announcement last year, many fans were unsure that the first-person shooter would ever come to fruition, as Arkane’s official second installment, Prey 2, was cancelled due to troubled development.

With Prey not technically being a sequel to the original – in fact, the developer has stated in the past that it has no ties to the first one – many fans have been wondering exactly what the game is, with Arkane Studios president Raphael Colantonio describing it as a “psychological-thriller” dealing with “the theme of identity.” As it happens, when compounding the content found within previously released extended gameplay and today’s most recent trailer, it’s obvious that Arkane was inspired to take this “reimagining” in a wholly new direction from the source material.

While plenty of fans are tremendously enthusiastic about the forthcoming release of Prey, some PC players are wondering whether or not the science fiction title will suffer the same fate as Arkane Studios’ most recent release of Dishonored 2, which encountered major issues on the platform during the early days of its availability. Thankfully, it seems as if the developer has learned from its past mistakes, as Raphael Colantonio has promised Prey will be “flawless” on PC at launch. Fingers crossed, Arkane Studios will be able to put out a stellar release on all of the game’s platforms come May.
