Geoff Keighley, host of The Game Awards 2016, reveals that Arkane Studios' upcoming shooter Prey will have new gameplay footage debuting at the award show.
The Game Awards 2016, December's largest industry event and one of the biggest award ceremonies in the gaming industry, is just a few short days away from its December 1 debut. Host Geoff Keighley will take the stage for a night of exciting performances, including Run the Jewels and the Doom soundtrack played live, and a celebration of the industry's hard work. As previous years of The Game Awards have shown, though, most of the hype revolves around the award show's game announcements and premieres.
Today Geoff Keighley decided to reveal yet another of The Game Awards 2016's big premiers. Bethesda, who has made announcements at The Game Awards previously, back when it was called the Spike Video Game Awards, will be taking the stage once more. The publisher will have more to show of the revamped first-person shooter Prey, which is planned to launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2017.
According to Keighley there will be a, "worldwide debut of new gameplay," for Prey. Prey was officially announced at E3, but Bethesda waited until Gamescom to show off the first gameplay for Arkane Studios' game. The trailer showed off some very interesting things, including the main character transforming into a coffee cup to slip through a small window and using pyromancy to destroy some enemies. It'll be interesting to see what aspect of Prey Bethesda will want to share next.
Prey isn't the first game set to premiere new footage or gameplay during the event. Prey will be the third game officially confirmed, with at least one other unofficially confirmed and several others rumored. Previous iterations of the awards show have included anywhere between 5 and 15 announcements, so expect Geoff Keighley to have more to share in the days ahead. Here are the officially confirmed games to have premiers on December 1:
- Mass Effect: Andromeda - Gameplay Debut
- The Walking Dead: A New Frontier - Gameplay "Extended Look"
- Prey - New Gameplay Debut
Unofficially, Randy Pitchford of Gearbox Software told fans via Twitter to look forward to something special during The Game Awards. Specifically, he made the announcement in relation to a fan mentioning how a Gears of War and Duke Nukem crossover game would be interesting. This has lead to speculation regarding Gearbox's next Duke Nukem game being announced at the event. Alternatively, the announcement could be related to a Bulletstorm Remastered rumor that's been swirling for months based on a ratings board leak.
All other rumors at this point are entirely unconfirmed and largely hearsay. Still, rumors are fun to consider. With Bethesda now confirmed for the event, the rumor that a Wolfenstein sequel could be announced soon gains a bit more credence. Telltale's also confirmed to be at the event, so the Guardians of the Galaxy adventure game could be prime for a reveal. The Marvel vs. Capcom sequel is unlikely, but has fans riled up nonetheless. On the less likely side of the spectrum, The Last of Us 2, Destiny 2, Final Fantasy VII HD have all been mentioned.
The Game Awards 2016, hosted by Geoff Keighley, is slated to air live on December 1 starting at 5:30pm PT.
