It seems evident that Portal is not going away any time soon, as a team of modders is currently working on its own remake of the celebrated Valve title. Bundled with the Orange Box set in 2007 — which also came with Half-Life 2, its expansions, and Team Fortress 2 — the darkly comical puzzle game is a beloved entry in the genre and became a gaming classic. While there was a successful follow-up in 2011, nothing much has come of the series since.

However, last year saw the release of Portal RTX, an upgraded version of the game that implemented gorgeous lighting and shadow effects courtesy of Nvidia's ray tracing technology. Outside of that, though, the franchise has been left dead in the water. This means it's pretty much been up to the fan base to keep it alive and well, and it looks as though some people are prepared to take on that challenge with an upcoming project.

As spotted by The Gamer, a team of dedicated Portal fans are currently working on "Another Slice," which is described as a remake of the original 2007 game. While not much is known about it currently, it sounds like it's not just going to be a straight-up recreation of the beloved puzzle title. The remake will aim to implement the art style from Portal 2, namely the rundown look of the Aperture Science facility. On top of that, "Another Slice" will touch up and expand some of the gameplay elements. Quite what this means cannot be said at this stage, but it will be interesting to find out.

Over the years, there have been some very imaginative mods for Portal, some of which reinvent the game almost entirely. Such examples include the paint gun mechanics of Aperture Tag and the introduction of a third portal that allows players to travel through time in Portal Reloaded. In short, the modding community is not willing to leave the game behind, so the fact that a bunch of fans are working on their own remake is not surprising, especially given this current era's propensity for bringing back classic games.

Of course, what many people would like is Portal 3. Even Erik Wolpaw, one of the writers of the previous games, has urged Valve to make a new entry in the series. Whether this will come to fruition is anybody's guess, but so many people still working on their own Portal projects shows just how much of an impact the puzzle franchise continues to have.

Portal RTX is available now on PC.
