Tuesday's Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase brought with it plenty of major reveals between old games being brought to the Switch and new adventures set to arrive in the coming months. Classic franchises like Mega Man Battle Network and Pac-Man World were confirmed to be coming to the console and Atlus closed out the presentation by revealing Persona 5's long-awaited Switch version for later this year. Alongside these major reveals came the announcement that one of gaming's most iconic puzzle games, Portal, would be arriving to the Switch very soon.

Since its debut in 2007, Portal has become one of the most widely-acclaimed puzzle franchises in the gaming industry. Valve's puzzle platformer tasking players with using the iconic "Portal gun" to warp through physics-based puzzles would go on to spawn a sequel in Portal 2 and a variety of spinoffs. Though the Bridge Constructor: Portal spinoff had previously come to Switch, the Nintendo platform had yet to see a version of the original game. Now, today's Nintendo Direct has officially revealed Portal: Companion Collection will be releasing today.

Portal: Companion Collection officially revealed its surprise launch through a brief sizzle trailer during Tuesday's Partner Showcase narrated by the series' primary antagonist, GLaDOS. The trailer featured short gameplay segments from both Portal and Portal 2 with GLaDOS revealing that the compilation would be releasing later today. The Companion Collection marks the first time a Valve-developed game has released on a Nintendo console with the previously-mentioned Bridge Constructor Portal developed by indie developer ClockStone.

While Portal: Companion Collection marks Valve's first official Nintendo release, fans of the developer have brought their own spin on the Steam studio's classics to Nintendo platforms. YouTuber James Lambert revealed earlier this year he was working on a Nintendo 64 demake of the original Portal. Another modder going by "ckosmic" has also previously created a playable Super Mario 64 within Valve's popular sandbox game Garry's Mod. Valve's own handheld Steam Deck has often drawn comparisons to the Nintendo Switch as well, with the two portable consoles sharing similar concepts.

Portal was just one of a collection of high-profile ports shown off during Tuesday's Partner Showcase. Alongside previously mentioned franchises like Mega Man and Persona, the highly-acclaimed Nier Automata was revealed to be receiving a Switch port later this year. Nintendo also showed off several other puzzle games coming to the Switch with Super Bomberman R 2 and indie studio Casus Ludi's Blanc among the highlights. Portal: Companion Collection's surprise launch will finally bring one of gaming's most beloved puzzle games to the Switch.

Portal: Companion Collection is available now for the Nintendo Switch.
