Portal 2's Interactive 'Super 8' Trailer

Portal 2 Super 8 Interactive Trailer

One of the most anticipated video games of the year releases today, courtesy of Valve. Portal 2 places players back in the shoes of Chell and back into the Aperture Science facility, albeit a few hundred years later.

While we play through Portal 2 to finish our review, we did want to share with you one of the coolest movie trailers ever. What do movies have to do with Portal? Well, Valve actually included a special trailer for J.J. Abrams' summerr flick, Super 8 inside the game. The twist, is that you do more than just watch the trailer...

In the 'Extras' menu of Portal 2, you can select the Super 8 trailer. When it loads up, players will actually be able to play through it, as if they were in the movie!

J.J. Abrams is a master when it comes to mystery and intrigue, especially when it comes to generating hype. We saw it with his TV work on Lost and Alias, and most notably with Cloverfield, a movie which many believed to be tied into Super 8 originally. This particular trailer puts you seemingly in the shoes of someone on the train that crashes in the theatrical Super 8 trailer and leads up to the iconic moment of the monster breaking out of the crashed train car.

The following footage was played on the PC version of Portal 2 with settings maxed out:

One of the user comments on YouTube asked how cool it would be if the monster broke out and you had to fight him. I don't think that happens in the movie although I'd pay to see that.

If Valve put this much work into helping promote Super 8 for Paramount Pictures, using their Portal 2 game engine, they might as well be responsible for the movie tie-in. This trailer, even tough you don't do anything, is already better than some of the movie tie-in games coming out this year.

What are your thoughts on the Super 8 interactive trailer found in Portal 2? Should more film take advantage of this style of marketing?

Portal 2 is available now for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Super 8 stars Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka and Kyle Chandler. It hits theaters June 10, 2011.
