'Portal 2' to Feature User-Made Levels on All Platforms

Good news! Valve has just confirmed that user-created levels for Portal 2 will be available on all platforms. That means gamers on Mac, PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 will all see Portal 2 user-made levels. While the modding tools will remain PC exclusive, some of the content that is created will be available on every platform.

The delivery of that content, however, could be different on each platform. No word yet as to what those differences might be, but it is likely safe to assume the content will be free for Mac and PC gamers. Since the PS3 version will support Steamworks, there is a good chance the content will be free for PS3 gamers, too. There is not much of a track record for free content on Xbox 360, however, even with past Valve games. Perhaps Portal 2 will change that, but at this point it is anyone's guess.

Valve has always been good with how they treat their PC-gaming community, and this news looks to continue that tradition. It is also a sign that Valve is looking at a way to get console gamers in on the party too. Some of the fan-made Left 4 Dead levels were amazing, but Xbox 360 gamers were left in the dark.

It will be interesting to see how Valve does end up handling the distribution of user-made content over the various platforms. They have stated that the PS3 version will be the best console version of the game, perhaps this is one area where it will really shine over the Xbox 360 version.

What are your thoughts on this news? Does this change the platform you will purchase and play Portal 2 on? Are you excited about this news, or do you think it means user-made levels might be diluted some so as to work on all platforms? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Portal 2 will be available April 20, 2011, on PC, Mac, Xbox 360, and PS3.
