Valve has released an update for the classic title Portal 2 with a big list of changes. Despite Portal 2 being a decade old, this patch implements multiple additions and fixes a series of issues affecting the game.

Portal is a series that many players throughout the community will know immediately. Even as a sequel, Portal 2 received positive reviews and widespread acclaim. The puzzle gameplay and signature world attracted gamers of all kinds at the time. With the introduction of cooperative gameplay, fans of the series could now enjoy the power of portals together. And now it looks like players both old and new can hop back in for some extensive updates.

When it comes to the improvements, Valve included options for many aspects of the title. First up is a new Vulkan render backend, a feature which should boost performance and stability. There are also smarter default video settings and better descriptions for these settings. When looking at co-op, friends can now join up even if using a controller over a keyboard on PC. Plus the resolution of player avatars is higher, a nice touch for improving the overall experience. There is also a new 360 degree spin action, a mechanic that should make for some interesting shenanigans.

The list does not stop there though, and those looking to jump back into Portal 2 also benefit from a series of bug fixes. Many of these involve Linux, so players on that operating system should see less crashing and now be able to view the early game intro cinematics. There are some fixes when flipping between controller and keyboard, making sure that the pinging option will continue working. While playing split-screen, the game instructor will correctly acknowledge input types for each user.

It is pretty amazing to see Valve come back to Portal 2 after all this time. While it unlikely anyone was actually asking for these changes, the list is significant enough to show that updates were necessary. Now players who are just jumping in for the first time should be able to experience the game the way it was meant to be played. And with improvements to one of the best co-op puzzle games, bringing in a buddy to think with portals is now better than ever.

Then again, some may question whether or not the time put into fixing Portal 2 is necessary. Especially with some of Valve's more recent titles like Artifact needing a reboot due to being considered a failure. It seems like the group should focus on new titles rather than dredging up titles from over a decade ago. In any case, this news should be great for fans of the Portal series.

Portal 2 is out now on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
