Arguably one of the hottest trailers that premiered at E3 today was Portal 2. However, even more intriguing was which keynote Valve chose to present the debut trailer – you guessed it (probably not), Sony – confirming that Portal 2 will arrive on the PS3.
Awesome, right? Such is the power of E3. Then again, Valve canceled their own E3 event last minute and this is what we got instead.
The sequel to Valve’striumphant first-person, dimension-ripping puzzler has been at the forefront of a lot of gamer’s minds since the first Portal 2 images surfaced in Game Informer magazine a few months back. Since then, we haven’t had much more in the way of information to report.
That is, until now. Without further ado, feast your eyes and ears on the debut trailer for Portal 2:
The extent of plant growth around the ruins of Aperture Science’s Enrichment Center reflects the fact that Portal 2 takes place hundreds of years after the events of the first game. GLaDOS and her associate personality cores awake from their scrapheaps and and set about rebuilding the Enrichment Center in new configurations that are irreversibly integrated with the local plant life.
The reconstructed Enrichment Center also appears to portray less conventional dynamics, with more vertical platforming as well as rooms on their sides. The portal gun mechanics looks to be unchanged, which is a good thing, but the way in which the portal mechanic will be used is definitely more diverse and inventive.
My hat is off to Valve once again. The genius behind Portal 2‘s visual style this time around cannot be understated. The juxtaposition of naturally-overgrown foliage intertwined with the hard edges and clean white tiles of the Enrichment Center is a visual treat of the type we rarely get to play around in.
If you take the new trailer, and add to it the content of the new ending that Valve patched-in to the PC version of the original game, it all follows the reported storylines that Chell (the character you play in the first game) is rescued by one of GLaDOS’ personality cores and placed in the relative safety of a stasis chamber. Could GLaDOS’ awakening and subsequent rebuilding of the Enrichment Center be the catalyst that awakes Chell – several centuries later? It looks as though we will have to wait until 2011 to find out.
