One of the most anticipated games of 2011, Portal 2, now has an official demo! Surprisingly, it plays rather terribly and looks like something on the Amiga. Valve rarely shows a game to the public until it is basically ready for release, so this unprompted mess of a demo is quite shocking. It's also, of course, an April Fool's joke.
Fileplanet is currently hosting a single player demo for Portal 2 with the file name "Portal2_SteamDemo.exe" that weighs in at a hefty 975.7 GB. Don't let the bytes stop you though -- the actual size of the file is closer to 6 MB. As if this were not enough to hint at the fact that the demo is a joke, the zip file it comes in is labeled as "April_Fools.rar." Despite the fact that this is a very cruel joke, the demo is playable, and it's not hard to derive a few minutes of fun from the 2-D side-scroller ripoff.
This is the description for the demo:
"This is the demo for Portal 2 featuring 4 test chambers as well as the full intro and prologue. The Portal gun can be obtained by moving to the first chamber and dropping onto a platform to your right."
"Though rough around the edges, this demo gives users a better understanding of what to expect in the upcoming launch of Portal 2 which will make its official retail release on the 18th of this month."
There's no real confirmation of who is behind the stunt, but Fileplanet lists Valve as the author of the file. Someone needs to come clean soon so we know who to blame. If you are looking for a much more robust (and less disappointing) 2-D Portal game, check out Portal: The Flash Version over at wecreatestuff.
Although this demo is slightly upsetting, recent news and videos, as well as exclusive interviews, have continued to crank up the hype knob for Valve's next killer app. April has officially begun, and the countdown for Portal 2 has as well.
Will you be buying Portal 2 later this month? Did this fantastic demo convince you your hard earned cash belongs with Valve? Sound off in the comments below.
Portal 2 releases April 19, 2011, for the PC, Mac, Xbox 360, and PS3.
