Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi has admitted that Polyphony Digital may consider releasing franchise entries on PC in the future. Historically a Sony PlayStation exclusive, Gran Turismo has never made its way onto other platforms in an official capacity, but the series' unique gameplay loop and car collecting and customization features mean it's got appeal across the board.

The very latest Gran Turismo title, Gran Turismo 7, launched on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles, specifically. While the three versions of the game are identical in regard to content, GT7 does scale visually depending on the hardware it's being played on, with the PS5 build in particular having access to advanced graphics options, such as raytracing.

GT Planet, a site dedicated specifically to Gran Turismo, recently had a chance to talk to Kazunori Yamauchi on the topic of launching a franchise entry on PC. "It's not a very easy subject," said Yamuchi," but, of course, we are looking into it and considering it." Yamauchi seems to have been talking about GT7 specifically rather than the older Gran Turismo games in the series, but the response was rather polite and non-committal. Yamauchi focused mainly on the performance aspect of the game, citing the game's advanced visuals and how "[GT7] is a very finely tuned title" that might not be able to run well on other platforms.

Naturally, it may be worth remembering that Gran Turismo 7 was a part of the original Nvidia game leak. Sony's God of War, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves have all already been launched on PC in the interim, and Returnal is all but certain to launch sometime in the (relatively) near future, having been datamined on SteamDB and beyond. Up until now, though, neither Polyphony Digital nor Sony have said much of anything about GT7 releasing on PC, making it notable that Yamauchi would comment on the matter in the first place.

With Neill Blomkamp's Gran Turismo film slated to hit the silver screen in August 2023, it's certainly possible that Sony is setting things up for a grand PC reveal over the coming months, and that Yamauchi is simply being coy about it for the time being. At the same time, with no official confirmation to speak of, it's anyone's guess whether the Nvidia leak was right about GT7, and if it's actually going to launch on PC at all.

In fact, the admittedly remarkable Forza Horizon 5 is the only major car-collecting game on PC. This means that Gran Turismo 7 would almost certainly be able to quickly carve out a niche for itself by focusing on its more serious, matter-of-fact approach to the hobby over FH5's innate quirkiness. For now, though, fans can only wait and see whether there's any merit to all these hints, or if it will all turn out to be a red herring.

Gran Turismo 7 is available now on PS4 and PS5.
