With Pokemon Yellow now officially available on the Nintendo 3DS, we’ve made a guide detailing how to catch one of the original three starter Pokemon – Squirtle.

As any aspiring Pokemon Master has come to realize, catching ’em all is a rather challenging task in the original pair of games. Indeed, with one-off starter monsters only being made available by owning a second version of the same game solely for trading purposes, it can become challenging and expensive to secure all of the beasts. Fortunately, Pokemon Yellow has done away with that by allowing fans to obtain every single one of them by completing tasks and talking to trainers. The only catch is that they can be easily missed.

Luckily for gamers, Squirtle is one of the easier beasts to obtain, as it's just simply given to those that prove their worth as a trainer. With that said, failing to speak to the proper individual will ensure that Squirtle never joins your squad, and that would be a big mistake given the power that the creature, and its evolutions, contain within Pokemon Yellow.

Without any further ado, let’s catch a Squirtle!

Step 1: Go to Vermilion City

This will be the next town that trainers arrive at after wrapping up the events in Cerulean City. Players need only head South from that town, take the underground passage, and keep heading South until they arrive. Despite being located near the ocean, however, players won't have time to relax, as there is a rather tough battle ahead of them.

Step 2: Defeat Gym Leader Lt. Surge

This one can be tricky, as there's a tree blocking the entrance to the gym. Players will have to talk to the captain of the S.S. Anne in order to get HM01, at which point they can teach one of their Pokemon the move 'Cut' to remove the obstacle. Once inside, however, they'll be greeted with a garbage can-based puzzle preventing them from directly taking on Lt. Surge.

This is a real doozy, and there's no sure way to get by it. As a piece of advice though, once a button within one of the barrels has been found, the second one will generate in one adjacent to it. Failing to identify the next one will restart the puzzle all over again though, so patience will be a virtue during this portion of Pokemon Yellow.

Once that's been accomplished, simply defeat Surge and his level 28 Raichu. This isn't a challenging task for those with Ground or Rock-type Pokemon at their disposal, so players should ensure that they've got at least one of those in their arsenal before attempting to take on the gym leader.

Step 3: Ensure There's Space in Your Party

If you stocked up on Diglets and the like before taking on Surge, then head on over to the Pokemon Center's PC and deposit a Pokemon to make sure that there's enough room for Squirtle. If you've already got a vacant spot on your 6-Pokemon roster, then simply proceed to Step 4.

Step 4: Talk to Officer Jenny

Head back into the center of Vermilion City and speak to the police officer simply standing there. After talking with her, she'll inform you that she's captured a mischievous Squirtle and is looking to give it to a strong trainer. If you've followed this guide and defeated Lt. Surge, then Officer Jenny will simply hand the Water-type over to you with no strings attached. Congratulations, you’ve just added Squirtle to your ever-growing team of Pocket Monsters!

Squirtle is a rather easy one to add to your team, but it can be easily missed for those that didn't know to pay attention for it. Of course, with the ability to export Pokemon from this game over to Pokemon Sun and Moon, it's definitely an important creature to have on your roster – if only for that reason
