After eight generations of Pokemon games, most fans would think that every type combination must have been used in one way or another. Yet somehow, this isn't the case. With hundreds of potential combinations, dozens still have yet to appear.
But who knows what the future of Pokemon will hold? After all, Gen 8 introduced a few new combinations, such as Galarian Slowbro's Poison/Psychic typing. Hopefully, the ninth generation of games will continue innovating, dreaming up weird and wonderful designs that utilize some never-before-seen typings. Here are a few examples of new combinations fans might like to see.
10 Dragon/Fairy
Technically, this type combination has appeared before, as Mega Altaria is a Dragon/Fairy type. However, Mega Evolution did not return in Gen 8 and is unlikely to do so in Gen 9. This combination has incredible potential that shouldn't go to waste, especially since Fairy-type's immunity negates Dragon's weakness to its own type.
Considering they both draw inspiration from fantastical creatures, Dragon/Fairy would make an excellent typing for a legendary or mythical Pokemon. This being would be powerful yet ethereal, a worthy protector of whatever new region is home to the Gen 9 games.
9 Bug/Dark
Dark-type Pokemon often have a cruel or vicious streak; however, Bug-types who fit this description usually take Poison as their secondary typing. It's a pity, since Bug/Dark could be a formidable combination. A giant black millipede could fit this type well, or perhaps nocturnal insects such as moths.
Unfortunately, this typing might not be so powerful in practice. A dual Bug/Dark type would have several weaknesses, and its moves likely wouldn't offer great type coverage. However, the potential for unique designs still make this combination worth exploring.
8 Ghost/Rock
There are a few existing Pokemon who might seem to fit this typing, such as and Golett and Galarian Yamask. However, these are Ghost/Ground, rather than Rock. A Ghost/Rock Pokemon might take the form of an animate tombstone, floating through an ancient graveyard.
Since Rock-type Pokemon are weak to Fighting moves, Ghost-type's immunity to these attacks could prove invaluable in battle. It would also provide decent type coverage, and work as a great addition to the roster for fans of either type.
7 Ground/Fairy
Some Pokemon designs have adapted from legends of golems before. Golett and Claydol, for example, are both inspired by legends of inanimate figures brought to life by spirits or psychic energy. A Ground/Fairy type could draw on similar ideas, but with a cute appearance and unique abilities.
Such a Pokemon would have two type immunities, being unaffected by both Electric- and Dragon-type attacks. Additionally, Ground-type's resistance to Poison-type moves negates the Fairy-type's weakness. This would make a Ground/Fairy type highly defensive in battles.
6 Bug/Dragon
It's high time fans got to see a dragonfly-inspired Pokemon with a typing that matched its design. Hopefully, Gen 9 will deliver, and fans will see such a critter flitting around lakeside areas. Perhaps the first in its evolutionary line would be a pure Bug-type, and more powerful evolutions would gain the Dragon typing.
In addition to the potential for charming or cool designs, this combination wouldn't possess the Fire weakness that's often fatal for Bug-types. While type coverage might be a little lacking for this Pokemon's attacks, it's worth pursuing for the creatures that could result.
5 Grass/Fire
At first glance, this combination might seem contradictory to the point of being impossible. However, Fire/Water seemed this way too, but Volcanion exists regardless. A Grass/Fire typing could prove useful in battles, since each type cancels out some of the other's weaknesses.
A Pokemon of this type might represent a woodland or prairie that has been damaged by wildfires. Burnt-out trees or ashen flowers could convey this concept. A more whimsical design for this typing might draw inspiration from a plant that produces spicy, "fiery" fruits such as hot peppers.
4 Ice/Poison
This one's a strange combination, but it would be interesting to see. What might an Ice/Poison type Pokemon look like? Perhaps fans will find a toxic mushroom that's adapted to a frozen environment, or a version of the poison dart frog that makes its home in wintry woods rather than rainforests. It would be fascinating to see what kind of innovation this typing might inspire.
This type combination could also be powerful in battle. Ice-types are typically regarded as fragile, but the Poison-type negates one of Ice's more common weaknesses, Fighting-type attacks.
3 Fighting/Fairy
Who says cute and powerful can't coexist? The Pokemon world is more than ready for a sweet, adorable creature that packs a fighting punch. A Pokemon with this typing might have an impish design, or one reminiscent of a fierce, spirited pixie.
Fighting-type would negate Fairy-type's weakness to Poison attacks. With the high physical attack of Fighting-types and the strong defensive stats that Fairy-types often have, this Pokemon would be a force to be reckoned with.
2 Electric/Fighting
It's bizarre to think that this combination has never shown up throughout the twenty-five years of Pokemon media. A creature that could infuse the power of lightning into its punches and kicks would be formidable beast – and likely an instant fan favorite.
Furthermore, a combination of Electric and Fighting-type attacks provides a wide range of type coverage in Pokemon battles. The former's high Special Attack and the latter's Physical Attack would turn this Pokemon into a beast on the battlefield.
1 Fairy/Fire
As the newest Pokemon type, it's no surprise that Fairy-type shows up so often on this list. However, it's still a little surprising that it hasn't been paired with Fire-type yet. This combination has the potential to be a fan favorite, and a beast in battle as well.
Such a Pokemon could draw inspiration from folklore regarding fire spirits, or creatures such as mythical salamanders. Its design could take so many different directions: cute, elegant, powerful, or even slightly creepy. There's no need to stop at just one!
