With E3 already looming, it's unlikely that Pokefans will receive any official announcements from Nintendo before the big show in June. It's actually been quite a while since Nintendo has made an official statement of any kind regarding the next Pokemon. The last one came several months ago when Nintendo confirmed a wide release window for the next game in the series.

Still, Nintendo's current silence regarding the next Pokemon game hasn't kept fans from theorizing and doing everything they can to discern just what could be coming in the series' near-future. Thanks to the tireless work of many vigilant fans, gamers have plenty of tidbits to tide them over until the next official statement; one of which being the possibility that the next game will usher in the 8th generation of Pokemon. However, the most recent item comes in the form of a new trademark filed by Nintendo - one that could have exciting implications for shiny Pokemon.

According to the news section of Serebii.net, Nintendo has registered a new trademark in Japan. Unlike its recent trademark for Pokemon Rumble, this one appears to be aimed at the entirety of the Pokemon franchise instead of hinting at a single new game. Specifically, Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures Inc.'s new trademark is for "ウルトラシャイニー (Ultra Shiny)." While there is no context accompanying the filing at this time, Serebii notes that the trademark is broad enough to potentially cover just about everything to do with Pokemon, from the games to toys and TV shows.

Shiny Pokemon have been around since the days of Pokemon Gold and Silver on the Game Boy, and have long been a draw for hardcore Pokemon collectors. Their appeal lies in their extreme rarity; the current chance of a natural encounter in the mainline games is ≈1/4096. This makes simply catching a single shiny Pokemon a big deal for many players, so much so that many Pokemon GO players flocked to its recent Kanto event hoping for a chance to catch one for themselves.

"Ultra Shiny" could mean just about anything when it comes to Pokemon. It could indicate a newer, rarer tier of alternatively colored Pokemon. It could also hint at a new mechanic aimed at making shiny Pokemon more accessible while still giving dedicated shiny hunters valuable prizes to chase. Possibilities abound right now, and will continue until Nintendo finally breaks its silence and tells fans what they're all dying to know.
