For a number of factors, the Pokemon trading card game has exploded in popularity in recent months causing card shortages for many retailers. Luckily for those looking to get into the game without needing to wait outside stores overnight for cards, a new Pokemon trading card game app is coming soon.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Live is The Pokemon Company's newest way for fans to engage with the card game without the upfront costs of buying cards. It's a free app that will allow anyone to learn and play the TCG available on mobile devices as well as both Mac and Windows. There's currently no set release date for it, however, its marketing says that it should be coming "soon."

This isn't the first Pokemon trading card video game that The Pokemon Company has released over the years dating back to Pokemon Trading Card Game on the Game Boy Color. What's more, there's already a fully supported TCG video game called Pokemon TCG Online that offers much of what playing the game in real life does. It's currently not entirely clear what the differences between TCG Online and Trading Card Game Live will be, but it seems like that information is to come as the latter's release gets closer.

Many fans are hoping that the game also gets a release on the Nintendo Switch as the console is perfect for the pick-up-and-play nature of the card game. This request doesn't seem entirely out of the question for the app as last month, the Pokemon TV app launched on the console after being exclusive to PCs and mobile devices so it's clear that the Pokemon Company is potentially open to bringing its popular apps and games to the Switch if the perceived demand is there.

Pokemon card shortages have been causing quite an issue for those who play the TCG as the high demand and low stock have resulted in card scalping and have even caused some retailers to temporarily stop selling them. The demand for limited-edition Pokemon collector's items doesn't just stop at cards, however, as the recently released Pokemon X Oreo collaboration saw plenty of collector's reselling the rarest Pokemon cookies on eBay for ridiculously high prices.

Hopefully, Pokemon Trading Card Game Live will help fans who want to get into the TCG without requiring them to deal with scalpers or the incredibly long wait times for getting cards. Fans can expect updates on the upcoming app sometime soon.
