The Pokemon franchise is bigger than it has ever been, that much is evident by the fact that Pokemon Sun and Moon marked the biggest debut for the property ever. That's an incredibly impressive feat for Nintendo's majority-owned subsidiary, and while the core RPG installments are still king, many fans will be happy to know that the Pokemon trading card game is also going strong. In fact, The Pokemon Company has just confirmed that it is preparing to release another new line on May 5th for the TCG called Pokemon Sun & Moon–Guardians Rising.

This reveal has arrived following the release of the initial Pokemon TCG: Sun & Moon series – the lot of which launched in North America on February 3rd of this year. That particular release marked the debut of some of Pokemon's newest creatures into the TCG, which was a monumental moment for fans. The Guardians Rising release will simply continue that initial undertaking, with the likes of the Alola region's Legendary Tapu Koko and Tapu Lele leading the charge.

They won't be alone, though, as the Pokemon TCG: Sun & Moon—Guardians Rising expansion also includes the following:

  • Over 140 cards
  • 12 new Pokémon-GX
  • 12 full-art Pokémon-GX
  • 3 full-art Supporter cards

While followers of the Pocket Monster franchise have that to look forward to, there have also been rumblings that fans of the video games may not be without much longer either. Job postings by developer Game Freak seem to hint at a new Pokemon game coming to Nintendo Switch, while industry insiders have reported that a project is well into development for the same platform codenamed "Pokemon Stars".

Even though these reports remain unconfirmed at this time, there's no question that Guardians Rising should make for an interesting expansion upon its release. On the other hand, longtime fans having trouble waiting for GR can instead collect portions of the nostalgia-inducing Pokemon TCG: XY–Evolutions set which features the art from the original Base Set of Pokemon cards.

The Pokemon TCG: Sun & Moon–Guardians Rising expansion will arrive in US and Canada on May 5, 2017.
