This week, Nintendo and Game Freak gave fans their first taste of Pokémon on the Nintendo switch in the form of Pokémon Sword and Shield. As the first Pokémon RPGs on a Nintendo home console, Sword and Shield have a lot of excitement behind them, but even so Game Freak is holding a lot of the reveals for E3, presumably. However, Pokémon Sword and Shield was willing to reveal the Gen 8 starters: Grookey (Grass), Scorbunny (Fire), and Sobble (Water).

Almost instantly, Pokémon fans had their favorite starter from Pokémon Sword and Shield. Some chose to go for the one that looked the most versatile while others let the cuteness factor play a dominant role. But according to a poll from the Pokémon Twitter, it looks like Sobble is the most popular of the three Pokemon Sword and Shield starters.

With 38% percent of the vote, Sobble won the poll of over 200,000 hopeful Pokémon Sword and Shield fans. The water-type Pokémon has that trademark innocence that tends to make for a popular starter, but ultimately it comes down to personal preference.

To its credit, Scorbunny was nipping at Sobble’s heels with 37% percent of the vote. Fire-type Pokémon are typically a popular choice for starters, dating all the way back to Charmander in Gen 1.

And unfortunately, Grookey brought up the rear with 25% of the vote. Like a cross between a monkey and a parrot, Grookey is cute enough but clearly it didn’t resonate with fans as much as the other two starters.

Of course, players’ favorite starter Pokémon for Sword and Shield could change once they see the evolutions of the three. While these starters are the new Gen 8 Pokémon that players will initially pick, the final evolutions are usually the ones that do the real work.

But for now, Sobble fans have bragging rights over Pokémon Sword and Shield starters. That could change come E3 when players see how they each evolve, but there are likely bigger choices to be made when the game eventually releases. For example, we still don’t know how Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield differ and what exclusive Pokémon each version will have.

Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are set to release later this year for Nintendo Switch.
