With the recent release of Pokemon Home, many Pokemon Sword and Shield trainers are finally reuniting with their collection of friends built up over multiple generations. Using the cloud-based service, it is also possible to bring up to 35 non-Galar region Pokemon into Generation 8 that couldn't be caught before. Two of these returning Pokemon are Meltan and its evolution Melmetal which take a lot of work right now.
Meltan is a Steel-type mythical Pokemon first introduced in Generation 7. The Hex Nut Pokemon would gain further anime popularity after being caught by Ash and then evolving into Melmetal through combining with its kin. In-game, the process to evolve Meltan into Melmetal isn't any less complex and bringing them into Generation 8 was only made possible since Pokemon Home was enabled days ago.
Evolving Meltan in Pokemon GO
The only known way to evolve Meltan into Melmetal is through Pokemon GO. Trainers first need to catch Meltan by using the Mystery Box feature in conjunction with Pokemon: Let's Go. Once caught, Meltan needs 400 candies in order to trigger its transformation. The candies can be acquired by catching and transferring more Meltans once its data has been registered. After evolving into Melmetal, trainers can move onto the next step of the process outside of Pokemon GO.
Transferring Melmetal to Pokemon: Let's Go
As the sole exceptions to the original Kanto region rule, Meltan and Melmetal can be transferred to Pokemon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Eevee! the same way as Generation 1 Pokemon. Trainers will need to go to Fuchsia City's Go Park and opt to bring the mythical Pokemon over to catch it. Note that the Switch with Pokemon: Let's Go and the phone with Pokemon GO need to be close to each other with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on. Furthermore, the Melmetal and Meltan must not be marked as favorite in Pokemon GO otherwise they will not show up as eligible for transfer.
Bringing Melmetal into Pokemon Home
Once Meltan and Melmetal are in Pokemon: Let's Go, trainers can move them into Pokemon Home with an option in the main menu. By selecting the "Pokemon" tab on the Switch version of Home, there will be a list of compatible Pokemon games including the most recent releases. By choosing that title, trainers can then move Pokemon into different games or out and into Home, which is where Meltan and Melmetal need to go.
Moving Melmetal into Pokemon Sword and Shield
Finally, trainers can apply the same Home method to transfer Meltan and Melmetal into Pokemon Sword and Shield, officially welcoming the mythical Pokemon to the Galar Region. Be aware that this process is final and both Steel-types won't be able to transfer back to Pokemon: Let's Go from Home. Trainers should also note that stats and abilities for Meltan and Melmetal won't appear until the Pokemon are in Sword and Shield.
