Pokemon Sword and Shield fans have been exploring the Isle of Armor in anticipation of the recently arrived Crown Tundra for some time now. With the icy DLC now available for purchase, players are finally starting to uncover its many secrets, like the two Legendary Horse Pokemon, Glastrier and Spectrier.

Glastrier and Spectrier were two of the more well-kept Crown Tundra DLC secrets, and every Pokemon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass holder eventually gets to choose and capture one of them. The official Pokemon website itself still lacks a page for the two hidden horses, so it's no surprise that many players are only finding out about them recently.

While many Crown Tundra and Isle of Armor promos featured the new hybrid bunny-deer Legendary, Calyrex, none of them acknowledged the Pokemon's long lost Legendary steeds. Calyrex can actually mount either of the two Legendary Horse Pokemon and take on an entirely new form, depending on horse. Unfortunately, players can only catch one Legendary Horse.

Glastrier, the Wild Horse Pokemon, is a pure Ice-type, and as such, imbues Calyrex with the Ice-type upon combining. Thus, Ice Rider Calyrex is a Psychic/Ice-type Pokemon. On the other hand, Spectrier, the Swift Horse Pokemon, is a pure Ghost-type. Together with the Legendary Pokemon Calyrex, it takes the form of Shadow Rider Calyrex, which is a Psychic/Ghost-type. While its icy counterpart, Glastrier, exhibits impressive Attack and Defense stats, Spectrier shines most in the Special Attack and Speed departments.

None of Spectrier's stats fall as low as Glastrier's unfortunate base Speed stat (30,) but its Attack, Defense, and Special Defense stats, are lacking. Glastrier, though incredibly slow, also features bulky HP/Special Defense capabilities together with its outstanding Attack/Defense.

When united with Calyrex, the two also gain access to unique special moves and abilities, which may affect some players' decisions. Glastrier's ability, Chilling Neigh, raises its Attack stat every time an enemy is knocked out. Spectrier's, Grim Neigh, does the same to the user's Special Attack. Upon fusion with Calyrex, they will learn a new ability that combines the effects of Calyrex's ability (Unnerve) with those of their own.

With regard to special moves, Ice Rider Calyrex learns the powerful Glacial Lance, and Shadow Rider Calyrex learns the equally strong Astral Barrage. Both deal massive amounts of damage with no added effects. Given that Glastrier's unsavory base Speed stat places it behind most top Pokemon, competitive players are tending to focus on its capacity to synergize with Trick Room teams, and other similar stat-swapping strategies. If Glastrier can be made to move more quickly, its Attack, Defense, and HP make it a menacing tank of a Pokemon.

Spectrier, on the other hand, performs best as an offense-forward beast. It functions as a remarkable special sweeper (high Special Attack, used to KO other Pokemon) and can hold its own without needing a setup like Trick Room. In light of this, many fans are opting for Spectrier as their steed of choice. Although Psychic/Ghost-typing makes it vulnerable to Dark or Ghost-type Pokemon, for example, its sheer Attack power more than makes up for it.

Pokemon Sword and Shield, and The Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLC Expansion Passes, are available now on Switch.
