While it didn't make as big a splash as other Ghost-type Pokemon introduced in generation five, Golett, as well as its evolution, Golurk, is available for the player to catch fairly early on in Sword & Shield. It is also one of the better Ghost-types that players can use for generation eight. Aside from the Ground-type being very useful in late-game battles, Golurk is also incredibly powerful in terms of stats and its movepool.
In order for players to be able to use the behemoth Ghost and Ground-type Pokemon, they will first need to track it down and catch it, either in mainland Galar or the Crown Tundra DLC. Thankfully, both Golett and Golurk are fairly easy to come across in Galar, though it may take some time before the player is able to evolve Golett should they catch one as soon as they can.
10 How To Evolve It Into Golurk
Like many of Unova's native Pokemon, Golett simply evolves via level up and doesn't require any unique items or methods in order to power it up to its best form. However, another trait that Golett takes from generation five is how late it evolves, as it won't start trying to turn into Golurk until it reaches level 43.
At that point in the campaign, Golett is significantly less powerful than it was at the beginning of the game. A good way around this power difference is to simply not use it in battle, as the mandatory EXP Share will make sure it is still gaining experience even if it never battles.
9 Where To Find It In Galar
Golett is fairly easy to find in Galar and can be caught almost immediately after gaining access to the Wild Area. The easiest place to find one is in the Watchtower Ruins alongside the plethora of other Ghost-type Pokemon, though it will be too high a level to catch one right away.
However, players can find Golett inside Raid Dens in Rolling Fields, the first area open to the player in the Wild Area, and Bridge Field just behind the roaming Snorlax over the bridge. Should players want to wait a bit before they catch one, it can also be found in Dusty Bowl alongside other Ground-type Pokemon.
8 Its Abilities
One part of Golett's (and Golurk's) usefulness in battle is due to the quality of their available abilities. By far its least useful ability is Klutz, which prevents it from using held items except for those that increase EXP or EV gains in battle.
Its second ability, and the one that players should aim to get, is Iron Fist, which increases the damage dealt by all punching attacks. Golurk gains access to many great attacks that are boosted by Iron Fist, such as Close Combat, Shadow Punch, and Drain Punch, making it the best option for most builds of this Pokemon.
7 Its Hidden Ability & How To Get It
While not so easy to obtain, Golett and Golurk's hidden ability, No Guard, can be just as viable as Iron Fist, though the Pokemon will lose out on some serious damage buffs if it goes this route. No Guard, mostly known for being an ability on Machamp and Mega Pidgeot, makes every attack hit 100% of the time and pairs very well with moves like Dynamic Punch and Focus Blast, both of which are notorious for missing.
In order to get this hidden ability, players can either use an Ability Capsule or capture a Golurk in the Crown Tundra, specifically in the Frostpoint Field, Giant's Bed, Snowslide Scope, Frigid Sea, and Ballimere Lake Raid Dens. It is found in the Fighting-type Dens alongside Gigantamax Machamp.
6 TMs & TRs
Even though Golett and Golurk are Ghost-types, they have a very deep movepool that extends well beyond the usual Dark and Psychic-type coverage normally seen on that type.
Aside from being able to learn all three elemental punches, which pair very well with the Iron Fist ability, the Pokemon can also learn Drain Punch for healing, Rock Slide for coverage, as well as support moves like Ally Switch and Trick. The former is especially useful in double format for redirecting attacks towards Golurk.
5 Tutor Moves
The move tutor introduced in the Isle of Armor expansion added a large number of new attacks for Pokemon to learn, some of which fundamentally changed the landscape of standard gameplay and online competitive battles for the future of the game. Of these moves, Golett and Golurk can only learn two: Scorching Sands and Poltergeist.
While Scorching Sands, which functions like Scald, is quite a good attack, it is wasted on Golurk due to its low Special Attack stat. On the other hand, Poltergeist isn't anywhere near as good as the likes of Phantom Force, which Golurk can learn naturally at level 46.
4 Battle Niche
Between its great defensive stats, high Attack stat, and great damage buffing abilities in No Guard and Iron Fist, Golurk is clearly designed to be deal high damage while tanking most attacks thrown its way. While it also has a low speed, it is, unfortunately, a little too fast to be used effectively in a Trick Room team, though it can still work just fine so long as the opponent isn't also using Trick Room Pokemon.
As a Ghost-type, Golurk also gains access to great supporting moves that can let it fill just about any role it wants while still maintaining a high damage output on the side, something that few others of its type can boast.
3 Held Items
The held item given to Golurk depends entirely on the moveset and ability the player has chosen for it, as some items won't work at all if Golurk has the Klutz ability. In general, items like the Assault Vest work wonders alongside the Iron Fist and No Guard ability, while the Sitrus Berry is great for bulky builds that rely on Ally Switch to redirect attacks.
Lastly, the tried and true Weakness Policy can help boost Golurk's power even higher against Pokemon that would otherwise be good against it.
2 Team Members
While Golett and Golurk have their strengths, particularly when it comes to the diversity of their movepool, they won't be able to take care of every Pokemon by themselves. Generally, any fast Water, Grass, or Ice-type Pokemon can tear through Golurk like paper with little resistance.
With this in mind, pairing Golurk with a Pokemon that can cover these weaknesses, such as Corviknight, is a must. Corviknight not only resists most of these attacks but also has the Flying-type to avoid Earthquakes fired off by Golurk, which will go a long way to ensuring players get the most out of their Pokemon.
1 Its Real-World Inspirations
Like most Pokemon, Golett and Golurk are inspired by real-world creatures and myths. In this case, the Golett line is based on the clay golems from Jewish folklore, molded from inanimate material, usually some kind of clay, and brought to life to do the creator's bidding.
Although golems are usually only vaguely humanoid in appearance, the Golett line takes a lot of inspiration from the Prague golems in particular with its squat body and short limbs.
