The Pokemon Journeys anime is going through a major arc right now, with Ash competing in the World Coronation Series. It's a tournament pitting champions from every region, leading to a final battle with Galar's champion Leon. At the time of writing, Ash is fighting in a pitched 6v6 battle against Sinnoh's Champion Cynthia.

Of course, Pokemon wouldn't be Pokemon without some good old fashioned multimedia tie-ins. In order to celebrate this event, Pokemon Sword and Shield players can get Ash's Pokemon on their teams with a special code.

Last time, it was Ash's Dragonite up for offer. Now Ash's Gengar is taking the stage.

How to Get Ash's Gengar

Like with every Pokemon game's special online events, players can get Ash's Gengar using the Mystery Gift System. All players need to do is connect their switch to the internet, open the "Mystery Gift" section of the main menu, head to "Get a Mystery Gift," then hit "Get With Code/Password." From there, they just have to enter this code:

  • GENNGER0GE94

Interested players should act sooner rather than later: This code will only work up to September 15th, 2022.

Ash's Gengar's Attributes

Ash's Gengar is Level 80, with a naughty nature and the "Cursed Body" ability. Its four moves are Shadow Ball, Sludge Bomb, Dazzling Gleam, and Will-o-Wisp. It's a unique moveset: save for shadow ball, all of its moves are learned through Pokemon's TMs. Its other stats are as follows:

  • HP: 210
  • Attack: 146
  • Special Attack: 237
  • Defense: 125
  • Special Defense: 134
  • Speed: 205

Is Ash's Gengar Worth It?

While this is a nice treat, Pokemon Sword and Shield is at the end of its life cycle, and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are right around the corner. With that in mind, is it worth going through this rigamarole?

For die-hard collectors and anime fans, it's a non-question. Gengar has been a fan favorite since Generation 1, and was the second new Pokemon to join Ash's team in Pokemon Journeys. Even if it's unused, it's a fun novelty to have.

While it's currently unknown which Pokemon are not returning for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, this relative importance means that Gengar, and the rest of Ash's team, likely to make the cut. Players should be able to transfer them from Sword and Shield into the new game.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are available now for Nintendo Switch.
