Game Freak's Pokemon Sword and Shield broke new ground for the long-running series with the introduction of the Sword and Shield Expansion Pass. This pass includes two sets of DLC: The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra, each adding a new area to explore. Now that both sets have officially released, Nintendo put out a fun advertisement that turns their contents into the subject of a nature documentary.

Sword and Shield's setting, the Galar region, is based on real-world Great Britain, with the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra based on the Isle of Man and Scotland respectively. Thus it makes sense that Nintendo would venture to create an advertisement reminiscent of the work of David Attenborough, who is well-known for his work writing and narrating natural history documentaries for the BBC.

The four-minute Pokemon nature documentary advert, titled "Explore the Galar Region," begins by describing the region as a land of "sprawling landscapes and a diverse array of Pokemon in their natural habitat." It primarily covers what are called "two uncharted sub-regions" where new monsters have been discovered, and then showcases the features that players can unlock by purchasing the Sword and Shield Expansion Pass.

This breakdown is pretty extensive, covering both the trials required to evolve Kubfu in The Isle of Armor DLC as well as Dynamax Adventures in The Crown Tundra DLC; all while showing different locales with an impressive sweeping camera. However, the presentation is accentuated by its pithy, docu-style music and moments of humor parodying the otherwise serious style of media. For example, the narrator is chased by an Abomasnow, and later tries to downplay the scene of a trainer being attacked by a pair of Sharpedo.

The release of Pokemon's mainline DLC expansions has been just one way the franchise has thrived this year. Spin-offs such as Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX released, and others including New Pokemon Snap were announced. Meanwhile, Pokemon GO was one of five mobile games to make over $1 billion in 2020 (with a count ending December 14), and it was the third highest-grossing title behind PUBG Mobile and Honor of Kings.

With 2021 marking the 25th anniversary of Pokemon Red, Blue, and Green, it will be interesting to see what other announcements are made. In the meantime, a David Attenborough-styled Pokemon nature documentary seems like a fine way to cap off the year, whether or not more expansions are announced for Sword and Shield going forward.
