Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield, the latest pair of titles in Game Freak's legendary series, have been out for a few months now. Despite a bumpy road to launch, the games released to a warm critical reception. One of the strengths of Sword and Shield that critics praised is the host of new features that has been introduced to the veteran series.

One of the most game-changing of these features is cooking Curry. Curries are dishes that can be cooked and eaten by a player's current team while in a Camp. They give a variety of bonuses, which are all improved by the quality of the Curry itself. Making a top-quality Curry can be a difficult thing, especially as the game drops few hints on how to do so. To help out, here's our guide to how to make a delicious Curry every time.

Selecting Ingredients

There are two core ingredients to the new Curry feature in Pokemon Sword and Shield. The first is the Key Ingredient, which simply dictates which kind of Curry will be made. The second ingredient is Berries, up to 10 of which can be added to a Curry.

Each Berry has a different range of flavors, as seen in the graph below. Focusing on one of these flavors is the way to produce a high-quality product. Also, the rarer the Berry is, the stronger its flavor and the more chance of producing a good Curry.

To cook the best Curry, players will need to complete the three cooking stages perfectly. While fanning the flames, make sure that the flames are the perfect size, indicated by sparkles and excited Pokemon. Don't stir too quickly, as this will spill the Curry and lower its quality. When the time comes to add heart, make sure the love is on the inner green ring, which will complete the final step.

Depending on the rarity and flavor of the Berries used, as well as the competency of the cooking, the Curry can come in five different rarities. These rarity levels are listed below, in descending order of quality.

  • Charizard Class (Gold): Restores HP, PP, and status conditions. Pokemon get a lot friendlier towards you and earn a large amount of XP.
  • Copperajah Class (Silver): Restores HP, PP, and status conditions. Pokemon get friendlier towards you and gain a good amount of XP.
  • Milcery Class (Bronze): Restores HP, PP, and status conditions. Pokemon get somewhat friendlier towards you and gain XP.
  • Wobbuffet Class: Restores HP by half. Pokemon get a little friendlier towards you and gain a small amount of XP.
  • Koffing Class: Restores a "little bit" of HP. Pokemon get a tiny amount friendlier towards you and gain some XP.

Pokemon Sword and Shield is out now exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
