During this morning's 20-minute Pokemon Direct, Game Freak revealed a myriad of new content that is coming to Pokemon Sword and Shield  over the course of 2020 through the newly-announced Pokemon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass. This Expansion Pass will be comprised of two major updates, the second of which will feature a brand new area, Legendary Pokemon, a new co-op mode, and more, and it is called The Crown Tundra.

Releasing in Fall 2020, Pokemon Sword and Shield's The Crown Tundra expansion is all about exploration, and it will introduce players to an area of the Galar region that they have never seen before. This new area will function similarly to Pokemon Sword and Shield's Wild Area, with fans having the freedom to move and control the camera as they please, and there is much for players to discover scattered across The Crown Tundra's frigid landscape.

This includes "towering wintry mountains," intimate communities, and a new batch of returning Legendary Pokemon, including Mewtwo, Lugia, Kyogre, and Zekrom. Furthermore, this forthcoming Pokemon Sword and Shield expansion will also will bring entirely new Legendary Pokemon to these latest entries in the franchise, and Game Freak revealed one of The Crown Tundra's new Legendaries during today's Pokemon Direct, a psychic/grass-type Pokemon called Calyrex.

Additionally, in order to locate some of the new Pokemon included in the expansion, players will need to participate in a co-op mode that will be added alongside the release of Pokemon Sword and Shield's The Crown Tundra DLC. This new mode will send multiple players to explore the depths of the Pokemon Dens that will be found in the expansion's new area, and fans will see "Legendary Pokemon from past games Dynamaxing" as they explore.

Before fans dive into The Crown Tundra and its Pokemon Dens, though, Pokemon Sword and Shield's The Isle of Armor expansion will bring a bevy of new content to these extremely-popular games. This includes a new area, new rivals, new fashion items, and more, and it will be available in June as the first part of the aforementioned Pokemon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
