Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will be taking players to Paldea where plenty more Pokemon mysteries await. Although old features such as TMs make a return, the new generation will be putting an interesting twist on things. Players will be able to craft their own TMs using a TM Machine, which is a radical change to the series.

This change that Scarlet and Violet bring could be beneficial for gamers who dislike the way past games have made players grind for TMs. With TM Machines, gamers only need the right resources to craft the TMs they desire. While some gamers appreciate the change, others may not like the trend of Pokemon simplifying its gameplay with every generation.

TM Crafting in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Gamers were recently treated to a new lengthy Pokemon Scarlet and Violet trailer that showcased some of the new features that will be appearing. One of the most notable revelations is that players will be able to craft their own TMs, also known as Technical Machines. TMs are used to teach Pokemon new moves which can be used in battle. They differ from HMs, also known as Hidden Machines, which usually teach moves that Pokemon can use in the wild e.g. Cut and Flash.

TMs can be crafted using TM Machines, which is a bit of a weird name, as it stands for Technical Machine Machines. As the trailer revealed, there will be a menu of items to choose from, and outside of one's bag capacity, there does not seem to be a limit to how many TMs can be crafted. To make TMs, players will need to feed the machine with resources. For instance, to craft the Thunder Fang TM, a thousand League Points are needed, along with three Shinx Fangs.

The inclusion of the TM Machine is certainly a big change to the series, and it has elicited strong reactions from fans. Some view it as proof that Pokemon is being dumbed down to make it more accessible to a younger audience while making it too easy for older players. However, other gamers appreciate the TM Machine, as it could help them avoid unnecessary grinding that can sometimes detract from the fun parts of the game.

How TM Crafting Can Make Grinding Easier

TMs have always been part of Pokemon, though the various generations have handled them differently. They have been used to ensure that Trainers have to work hard to unlock the most powerful moves for their team. However, some gamers have felt like TMs require far too much grinding. For instance, TM44, which teaches Pokemon Imprison, is incredibly useful when used strategically, but it costs 100,000 Pokedollars in Sword and Shield's Battle Tower.

Other useful TMs are locked behind gym leaders. If players want Drain Punch, they have to beat the leader of Veilstone City's gym in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and if they desire Shadow Claw, they need to defeat the leader of Hearthome City's gym. While this is a relatively good idea, as it gives players further incentive to tackle the gym leaders, it also means that players can't learn certain moves until late in the game.

With TM crafting, players should have more freedom regarding when and how they teach their Pokemon new moves. This does not mean that players will be able to simply purchase the best moves without any effort, as the resource requirements ensure that some hard work is necessary, in addition to encouraging exploration. For instance, the trailer showed that the TM move Icy Wind requires 800 League Points in addition to three Snom Threads and three Snover Berries. Locating these items will likely have players journeying around Paldea and, in the process, discovering new Pokemon.

Other features appear to have been added to make the game more accessible. The legendary Pokemon will be used to get around, mostly eliminating the need for HMs, and players will also be able to use "Let's Go!" which enables Auto Battles, making leveling up Pokemon easier than ever. Changes such as these make Scarlet and Violet the best games for newcomers to jump into the series.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are scheduled to release on November 18 on Nintendo Switch.
