Pokemon Scarlet & Violet introduces a lot of new mechanics while still maintaining the core gameplay elements that have made the series such a smash hit over the years. This time around, players are free to explore the newest region, Paldea, however they see fit. The new open world is teeming with Pokemon and there are even times when a player may come in contact with a Mass Outbreak. These events are incredibly useful thanks to some of mechanics and gameplay elements found in the 9th generation. Players that want to get their hands on additional TMs, or those that are looking for Shiny Pokemon, will definitely want to keep their eyes peeled for these outbreaks. Here's all players need to know about Mass Outbreaks in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet.

What Are Mass Outbreaks And How Do They Happen?

Each time players log in to continue their Paldean adventure, they may see a notice appear at the top of the screen that mentions that there are Mass Outbreaks occurring all over the map. Players can spot these potential breakout spots by opening their map and looking for a mysterious glowing symbol (it will glow faintly and fade in and out slowly). These Mass Outbreaks will appear with an accompanying symbol to identify what type of Pokemon is flooding the area. If players have yet to see or catch the Pokemon that is part of the Mass Outbreak, the map will instead show a black question mark.

If players head to the location on the map, they'll receive a prompt at the top of the screen that they have located a Mass Outbreak. By roaming around the area, they'll discover quite a few of the outbreaking Pokemon in question, usually scattered around the landscape or in the water.

Why Are Mass Outbreaks Useful In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet?

Mass Outbreaks seem pretty underwhelming on the surface but they're actually incredibly useful in certain circumstances. Here's a few reasons why players may want to keep their eyes out for Mass Outbreaks and why they can be very beneficial in all stages of the game:

  • Players that are hunting for Shiny Pokemon will actually be able to see them in the overworld before engaging them in battle. Mass Outbreaks provide players with an improved chance of finding a particular shiny as they bring forth tons of the same Pokemon in one concentrated area. This is also especially useful for players who may not be familiar with a particular shiny Pokemon as they can easily spot the "odd one out" among a group.
  • Mass Outbreaks can be vital for those that are attempting to make TMs. The newest mechanic in Pokemon Scarlet has players collecting various Pokemon items from wild Pokemon by either catching or defeating them. Players that need a particular item from a particular Pokemon can use these Mass Outbreaks to farm.
  • Mass Outbreaks can also be beneficial for those that are interested in getting their hands on a particular Pokemon with their ideal IVs and EVs. With more Pokemon in one spot, it will be much easier for players to catch a bunch of them to sift through later on.
