There are various kinds of Pokemon, but fans have traditionally been drawn to those that look like dragons and dinosaurs. Hence, it is no surprise that Charizard is one of the most recognizable creatures. In response, Pokemon has featured the fire-breathing monster in plenty of merchandise and expensive Pokemon TCG cards. Not too far behind, Tyranitar has also steadily grown more popular. Game Freak has also capitalized on the monster’s fame, but it may be taking things too far.

In addition to Charizard's Mega Evolution, it also has a paradox form, which it receives in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. All these forms seem a little excessive, especially for a beast that is powerful enough without them. Perhaps Game Freak should focus on giving other Pokemon the spotlight as well.

Charizard and Tyranitar

Since Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, the Pokemon roster has expanded to accommodate over a thousand critters. This is great, as it means that there is something there for all Trainers to fall in love with. Over time, there have been a few monsters that have managed to become fan favorites. The most obvious example is Pikachu, who has become the franchise’s adorable mouse mascot. Gamers have also fallen in love with powerful critters like Mewtwo, Dragonite, and Charizard.

Despite looking like one, Charizard is not a dragon. Instead, it is a Fire/Flying Dual-Type Pokemon. This changed with Pokemon X and Y because, when it Mega Evolves, it becomes a Fire/Dragon Dual-Type beast. Fans can’t be blamed too much for growing obsessed with this Pokemon, as it looks ferocious and breathes fire like a foe out of a fairy book. Over the years, there have been a few critters that have tried to knock Charizard off its throne as one of the most beloved monster-like Pokemon. Some have come close, including powerful beings like Garchomp. Nevertheless, none have succeeded, though the Pokemon that has come closest has to be Tyranitar. This is in part because The Pokemon Company has been shining the spotlight on it for quite a while.

Pokemon Gives Tyranitar Special Treatment

Tyranitar in a volcano in the anime

Tyranitar is a large, green Pokemon that looks a bit like a dinosaur. It is Dark/Rock-Type with high attack stats and great speed, allowing players to take the lead in a battle. Its appearances in the anime confirm that it is not a Pokemon to be trifled with, and anyone with it in their team is already at a huge advantage. Consequently, it finds itself used frequently competitively. As if that wasn’t enough, Game Freak has graced Tyranitar with a few forms. The first came with Pokemon X and Y when the Tyranitar received a Mega Evolution. Admittedly, its Mega Evolved form is awesome, with green spur jutting from its back, and the red on its front complementing its green scales.

A Mega Evolution would have been enough for a Pokemon as powerful as Tyranitar, but it received yet another new form in Scarlet and Violet through the paradox Pokemon. Tyranitar’s future form is Iron Thorns. Interestingly, it is far more cool-headed than its past form, and it prefers to avoid fights. For fans who love Tyranitar, it must be a real treat to have so many versions of this Pokemon to play around with. Nevertheless, Game Freak should take care to not give it too much, or it could, like Charizard, become a Pokemon that is overrepresented in the series.

Tyranitar is by no means terrible, but too much of a good thing can be bad. Although there has been no DLC announced for Scarlet and Violet, it could bring new paradox Pokemon to the games that allow lesser-appreciated ones to get some love. It could also help mend some of the performance issues that Pokemon fans have been complaining of.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available on Nintendo Switch.
