In many ways, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are breaking away from the norms of the franchise. Fuecoco doesn’t seem to follow the Fire starter Zodiac pattern, as one example, but its open-world design, non-linear story, co-op, and more are all major advancements for the franchise formula. Indeed, it seems that all the innovations fans wanted out of Pokemon Sword and Shield could be coming in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

That said, there are still a lot of unconfirmed variables regarding the game, with known and reliable leaker Riddler Khu currently being the only real source of information. Anyone who follows them know, however, that everything is coming in the form of a cryptic tease, such as recent hints toward time travel in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Now, they’ve posted another teaser, potentially hinting at another RPG advancement for the game.

Khu recently posted an image of Detroit: Become Human, the choice-based Quantic Dream game, and suggest fans would see similar in Titan (the code name for Gen 9). It’s unlikely Khu is pointing toward any Android-like elements in the game, though admittedly that isn’t impossible, but it seems more likely that Khu is suggesting Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will feature story-based choices that impact how players go through the game.

Given the aforementioned open design and non-linear story progression, it would make sense if players could make different choices that take them down different paths. How exactly remains to be seen; it could be as simple as facing different gym leaders based on choice, impacting relationships with NPCs based on dialogue choices, and so on. It doesn’t seem likely that choices would have major impacts like narrative-driven games, but at the same time, it would be interesting to interject different paths based on player choice in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Not only would this bolster replay value, but other potential features like a new game plus or difficulty options in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (unconfirmed, pure speculation) would give fans a reason to run through each game again. It would also stand to reason, given that Scarlet is set in the past and Violet in the future, that each game would feature different choices and branching paths.

That could possibly give fans even more reason to pre-order the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet double pack. Indeed, despite having only released two official trailers so far, it seems clear that hype is high for the next generation in the Pokemon franchise.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet release November 18 for Switch.
