Pokemon Scarlet and Violet still have a long way to go in terms of revealing information about new and returning Pokemon, the region Gen 9 is set in, battle gimmicks, and more. Summer is usually when these bits of information begin to be shared in a more substantial and consistent way, which is especially true for games that are released in the fall, like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Still, there are many alleged leaks circulating online about what Generation 9 games are going to feature and what sort of Pokemon will be in them, with a focus being the various theories on starters and their evolutions.

A known Pokemon leaker that goes by the name of Riddler Khu has been sharing important clues with regard to several aspects of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and a recent leak may be hinting at a connection between the starters and a major Spanish myth. This myth is the legend of Saint George and the dragon, which is the story of how Saint George slew a dragon that was terrorizing a village, to the point that the people started offering sheep and then children as sacrifices to keep the beast satiated and at bay. This story has been theorized to have influenced the design of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's starters, and Khu's recent leak might be indirectly confirming it.

Why Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Fuecoco Resembles Iberian Mytholigical Creatures

Riddler Khu's recent leak about Fuecoco comes with a picture of a crocodile with a rooster on its head, which is not too dissimilar from the depiction of the dragon that Saint George fights in the corresponding popular Spanish myth. In fact, the dragon is often portrayed with a red or orange crest on its head, which Fuecoco already displays in a way in its base form, with short yellow hair on its head. Because Fuecoco seems to have hair rather than a dragon-like crest, and because Khu already addressed its final type combination as Fire/Ghost, it's possible that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's link to the myth of Saint George and the dragon extends to other Spanish mythical creatures.

One of these creatures is the Catalan dragon-like beast called "Cucafera," which is often represented as an enemy of Saint George, and it's depicted with long hair on its head. Oftentimes, the Cucafera's body resembles that of a turtle but with the typical scales of a crocodile, and also a crocodile's head and tail. It's also worth noting that Portugal has a similar tradition in the form of the "Festa da Coca" (which roughly translates into Coca Festival), which is about Saint George and this mythological monster called Coca fighting in an arena, with the victor determining whether the crops will be good each year. These legends all feature a creature that's similar to both dragons and crocodiles, and it's likely that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Fuecoco could be inspired by them given the importance of the hair and the crest.

A rather important clue might be coming from another one of Fuecoco's features. The fiery crocodile has a noticeable yellow patch on its stomach and another one on its back, and the official Pokemon Scarlet and Violet website addresses them as scales that absorb external heat that is later converted into fire. On the other hand, Fuecoco's hair is said to be overflowing with fire energy coming from the Pokemon's body, so much so that the Pokemon can erupt flames from its head. What makes the patches important, however, is the fact that Saint George's legend states that the hero eventually killed the dragon when he spotted a weak patch on its body, perforating it with his lance and defeating the monster.

How Quaxly and Sprigatito Could Relate to the Myth of Saint George

Spiratito, Quaxly, and Fuecoco in a cutscene from Scarlet & Violet

If The Pokemon Company is indeed trying to recreate the characters of the myth of Saint George with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's starters, the role of Saint George would probably have to go to Quaxly, which is seemingly going to be Water/Fighting according to Khu's leaks. In the myths, Saint George is often depicted with heavy armor, a lance, and a plumed helmet, much like a medieval knight. From the trailers and the description on the official Pokemon Scarlet and Violet website, Quaxly seemingly cares a lot about its blue hair, and it could very well evolve into a knight-like Pokemon.

The remaining role would be that of the princess, which in the story is the young daughter of the king that is going to be offered as a tribute to the dragon on the day that Saint George runs into villagers and their horrific story. When Saint George finally slays the dragon, he also saves the princess' life and returns her to the king. As other leaks from Khu suggest, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Sprigatito final evolution will be a bipedal Pokemon that is very humanoid in terms of features, and it's also going to be quite feminine in its looks. As such, the myth of Saint George and the dragon could be embodied by Gen 9 starters in a subtle way.

Overall, there are many possibilities that The Pokemon Company could explore with Spanish and Portuguese myths, and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is the perfect place to do it. In fact, it's not impossible that other creatures in the regional Pokedex will be based on local legends or meaningful symbols, especially when it comes to roosters and bulls. Ultimately, this remains speculation at this stage, but it will be very interesting to see what Gen 9 ends up doing with its Pokemon.
