In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, gamers are invited to partake in yet another adventure. This time around, the journey takes place in Paldea, a region populated with wild and wonderful creatures. One of the most engaging aspects of collecting Pokemon is watching them evolve into stronger forms, though some evolutions can be disappointing. As luck would have it, Rellor does not suffer the same fate, and it receives a magnificent evolution.

After evolving, Rellor becomes more than a mere dung beetle, and it gains an additional Type. Although it probably won't find much usage on the competitive scene, Rabsca proves that Game Freak can provide stellar evolutions. There may be a chance for gamers to see more of these if Pokemon Scarlet and Violet receive DLC.

The Evolutions of Paldea

Bramblin, Pawmo, and Rellor from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Scarlet and Violet are games that bring a new level of open-world freedom to the series. As gamers explore Paldea, which is based on the Iberian Peninsula, they discover a plethora of critters that inhabit varied environments. These critters aren't just for show, however. Players are encouraged to catch and train them. There are several benefits to training Pokemon, as they become stronger in battle and sometimes evolve into more powerful creatures.

There are several ways to evolve Pokemon. Trainers can level them up, trade them, or give them one of the various special stones. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet introduce a new method where creatures evolve if players walk around with them for long enough. The fauna of Scarlet and Violet are interesting, but their evolved forms can be quite underwhelming at times. There are several instances where evolution simply means the Pokemon grows bigger, or it learns to be bipedal. This is the case with Bramblin, a Pokemon which looks like a tumbleweed. When it evolves into Brambleghast, it just looks like a bigger ball of tumbleweed. The same can be said for Pawmi, an adorable Pikachu clone. Its evolved form, Pawmot, looks no different save for the fact that it is fully bipedal.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Rellor Is an Exception

The pokedex cover for Rabsca in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Unlike most Pokemon in Paldea, Rellor's evolution is anything but plain. Rellor is a Bug-Type Pokemon that resembles a dung-beetle. It can be seen pushing along a ball of mud and, according to its Pokedex entry, it treasures this ball of dirt more than its own life. The Pokemon is also proof that you should not judge a book by its cover because it evolves into a rather spectacular Pokemon called Rabsca.

Instead of being a plain brown beetle, Rabsca is a bipedal, turquoise creature that is a Bug/Psychic Dual-Type. It holds a bright pink ball of Psychic energy above it. Unlike Rellor, this is a Pokemon that looks like it could actually damage any competitors that come its way. Its Pokedex entry is also very interesting, as it suggests that its external appearance is merely a facade, and its true body lies within the psychic ball it holds up. It easily ranks as one of the most dramatic evolutions of all in Paldea. Unfortunately, with its low stats, it still fails to be a sufficiently competitive team member.

For players wishing to add a Rellor to their team, they can easily be found in the Asado Desert. Walking around town with the Pokemon out of its Poke Ball will make it evolve. Alternatively, impatient Trainers can make use of a clever trick that fans have found to quickly evolve Pokemon that rely on the Let's Go feature.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available on Nintendo Switch.
