With a new Pokemon generation on the horizon, fan speculation is high. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet surprised fans when it was announced for a late 2022 release, a little sooner than some were expecting. So far, only the three starter Pokemon have been revealed, meaning that there are a ton of new Pokedex additions not yet shown. Fans are hoping to see some new and/or strong type combinations in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - and one pairing in particular.

This combination is Fairy/Dragon, which has been discussed and requested by fans since the introduction of the Fairy type in the sixth generation of Pokemon games. Fans generally speculate that a creature of this type would be both powerful in battle and adorable to look at. There are a number of reasons why Game Freak would be wise to consider including a Fairy/Dragon Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet's Pokedex.

A Powerful Asset in Pokemon Battles

A hypothetical Fairy/Dragon-type Pokemon would be resistant to no fewer than seven other types of damage - Electric, Fire, Grass, Water, Bug, Dark, and Fighting. It could potentially be completely immune to damage from other Dragon-types, while able to do extra damage to them in return. The generally high Special Attack stats of both types would create an effective attacker, though it would be no slouch in Defense or Special Defense either. Its only major weakness would be Steel-type Pokemon, which would deal it extra damage and be resistant against its offensive moves.

Fans have had one preview of what such a type combination might look like: Mega Altaria, a special form of Altaria introduced in the sixth generation of Pokemon games. Mega Altaria generally has balanced stats, although its low speed can cause it to struggle competitively. Some players like using Mega Altaria in battle because it can be used as a tank against both physical and special attacks. It is also liked for its appearance, being a large, fluffy creature with many wings made from clouds.

More Representation For Two Rare Types

As of the release of Pokemon Legends: Arceus, both Dragon and Fairy remain among the rarest types of Pokemon. Dragon is the fourth rarest, while Fairy, the newest type released, is the second rarest after Ice. Many of these existing Dragon and Fairy-type Pokemon are legendaries or pseudo-legendaries, unable to be caught until very late in their respective games and thus providing limited opportunities to use them in battle. A Fairy/Dragon-type that is not a legendary could go a long way towards addressing this disparity.

Because of their relative rarity, both Dragon and Fairy types are lacking in dual-type Pokedex entries as well. Typings with only a single Pokemon to their name include Normal/Dragon, Poison/Fairy, Dragon/Ice, Ghost/Fairy, and more. A Fairy/Dragon-type Pokemon has consistently shown up on fan lists of most requested typings for future games, along with such other hoped-for combos as Fire/Grass, Rock/Ghost, and Fighting/Fairy.

An Opportunity To Showcase Spain

Although it has not been officially confirmed, fans speculate based on the initial reveal trailer that the new region seen in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is inspired by Spain, Portugal, or a combination of both. Two of the Starter Pokemon, Sprigatito and Fuecoco, have Spanish-sounding names, while Water-type Quaxly may be inspired by the legendary literary hero Don Quixote. Fans have been quick to suggest other potential Spanish themes for Generation 9 Pokemon, including its rich history, sports such as bullfighting, signature dishes, and events like the La Tomatina tomato festival.

There are many parts of Spanish history, lore, and culture from which a potential Fairy/Dragon Pokemon could draw its inspiration. It could have a more birdlike appearance, mirroring Spanish fowl such as the Griffon Vulture or Spanish Imperial Eagle. Alternately, this Pokemon could turn to mythical creatures for its look, such as the heroic Rooster of Barcelos or the creepy bogeyman bicho-papao. Other sources fans have considered include chivalric romance novels such as the aforementioned Don Quixote as well as the abstract art of Pablo Picasso.

An Existing Pokemon Could Gain a New Type

Instead of creating an entirely new Fairy/Dragon-type Pokemon, Game Freak could also choose to add a secondary Dragon typing to an existing pure-Fairy Pokemon or create a new regional variation on an existing Pokemon. Fans have been speculating about this possibility since the concept of regional forms was first largely expanded in the Alolan region, during the seventh generation of Pokemon games. Popular candidates include Togekiss, because of its already somewhat dragon-like appearance; Grimmsnarl, due to its dark, craft personality, and Aromatisse; which produces a foul, unpleasant scent.

Current rumors indicate that regional forms are intended to return in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, with Diglett, Spritzee, and Whiscash as popular contenders. One leak, although still unproven, even shows off a sketch of a design for the new Diglett variant, showing it growing extremely tall. Although none of the potentially leaked Pokemon variations have the Fairy/Dragon type, if regional variations are present in Generation 9, there are likely several more to be revealed before the game's release. Hopefully, more trailers will show off Pokemon other than just the three starters from the new region.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will release in late 2022 for the Nintendo Switch.
