The June 1 Pokemon Scarlet and Violet trailer may have been more jam-packed than many anticipated. While no gimmick was shown, it did confirm Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s release date, a new co-op feature, several Pokemon available in the new region (including new ones like Lechonk), and give fans a glimpse of the new legendary Pokemon.

Outside their design and names, nothing else is known. Pokemon Scarlet’s exclusive legendary is Koraidon, while Miraidon is exclusive to Pokemon Violet. It does seem they tie into some overarching theme of past vs. future, as Koraidon’s plumage appears to hint toward the past, and the jet engines of Miraidon hint at the future. Of course, beyond all of this, the biggest question right now is what type these Legendary Pokemon are.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Miraidon and Koraidon Types

Up front, both Pokemon seem to be Dragon-types, but many fans generally wish Game Freak stays away from Dragon-type legendaries. And, just because these two legendaries appear to be based on some form of reptile/lizard doesn’t necessarily mean they are dragon types—Charizard is a good example of this. Not to mention, if Game Freak went with the obvious, it would be Fire/Dragon and Electric/Dragon, which would just be a repeat of Pokemon Black and White’s Reshiram and Zekrom.

On the assumption that the legendaries may not be Dragon-types then, their potential typings become more interesting. Looking at Miraidon’s design, there are three notable elements: yellow electric patterns on its tail, chest, and head; an otherwise metallic design to its appendages, like the face, torso, arms, and legs; and the fact that it is floating (seemingly because of the jet engines). Not to mention, its eyes have an apparent spark to them.

Electric seems to be the most obvious first-type for Pokemon Violet’s Miraidon, while a case could be made for a secondary Psychic typing due to its floating ability and general stance. However, because this is done by what appears to be engines, it seems more likely to be Steel. An Electric/Steel Pokemon would be more interesting than Electric/Dragon.

Looking at Pokemon Scarlet’s Koraidon, its red design heavily hints at a Fire-type, as well as the general design of its eyes. Its plumage on its head and tail, as well as its expanded throat region, are all noteworthy. If not Dragon, it’s hard to pinpoint what it could be. Ground or Rock might be good options, on the assumption that it can spit them out of its throat, but then the feathers are weird. It’s highly unlikely to be Fire/Flying.

Leading speculation right now would perhaps suggest a Fire/Fighting legendary Pokemon, which could be argued as a more traditional take befitting its themes. Now, it has been done before, but Fire/Fighting would have a huge advantage over Electric/Steel, so it would stand to reason Game Freak would perhaps try to choose something more balanced. Perhaps not, but if Koraidon were Fire/Rock, that would balance out more.

Koraidon’s Fire would be effective against Miraidon’s Steel, whereas it's more neutral toward its potential Electric typing. In reverse, Miraidon’s Steel would be more effective against its Rock typing, with the Fire and Electric just being different styles. It all remains to be seen, of course, but this is something Game Freak hopefully reveals for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet in the coming weeks or months.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet release November 18 for Nintendo Switch.
