Ever since the gen 1 games were released more than a quarter of a century ago, flying has played a hugely important role in the Pokemon series, allowing players to get from one point on the map to another in just a matter of seconds. Given the size of the Paldea region, learning how to fly in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet will likely be pretty high up on most players' lists of priorities, perhaps more so than ever before.

Sadly, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet do a pretty poor job of teaching players how to fly, not to mention how to perform other classic field actions like surfing and climbing rocks. In previous games, players had to find HMs in order to do these things, but in Scarlet & Violet, these iconic field skills are now tied to one particular Pokemon and can only be unlocked by completing special challenges that are scattered throughout Paldea.

Upgrading Koraidon and Miraidon

Early on in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, players will be given a special Legendary Pokemon that they can ride around on. Scarlet players will get Koraidon, while their Violet counterparts will be given Miraidon. Initially, players will only be able to ride around on these Pokemon by pressing the + button. However, what a lot of players might not realize is that Koraidon and Miraidon can be upgraded to perform a wide variety of other tasks.

In order to unlock new abilities for Koraidon and Miraidon, including teaching them how to fly, players will need to follow the Path of Legends, which means tracking down and defeating the five Titans for their academy classmate Arven. Each titan that they defeat will unlock a new skill, which players will then be able to use while riding Koraidon and Miraidon out in the field.

Though players can tackle the titans in pretty much any order they like, the above order is highly recommended due to how powerful some of them are. It's also worth noting that players will need to have unlocked the Swim ability in order to reach the False Dragon Titan, so players will have to defeat Bombirdier before Dondozo whichever order they decide to approach the Path of Legends.

In terms of usefulness, the skill unlocked by beating Donphan is arguably the best Legendary ability in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. This is because, in addition to allowing players to glide while riding their Legendary, it also lets them fly to any Pokemon Center that they've already visited from the map screen. To find out if they can fly to a particular Pokemon Center, players simply need to look for the wing next to the Pokeball icon.

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet are available now for the Nintendo Switch.
