Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have a duplication glitch that allows players to clone Pokemon and catch as many of the same Pokemon as they would like. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are the latest entries in the long-running Pokemon franchise, and they have proven to be two of the most controversial titles in the series so far. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet glitches are fairly commonplace, though most are visual oddities as opposed to anything fans can exploit.

Many Pokemon games have had duplication glitches that players have been able to take advantage of to clone Pokemon. It's now been discovered that out of the many glitches in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, one lets players clone their Pokemon. The glitch was reported on by Nintendo Everything and initially discovered by YouTuber Austin John Plays, who has shared a video on exactly how Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players can clone Pokemon in the game.

When out exploring Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's open world Paldea region, players can plainly see wild Pokemon that they can catch. This includes shiny Pokemon, who are notable for having a different color palette than they're supposed to have. Shiny Pokemon are highly sought-after by the Pokemon community due to their rarity, and so players will want to clone them especially. After players have found a Pokemon they want to clone, they need to follow a five-step process.

How to Duplicate Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

  1. Catch the Pokemon
  2. Walk to a nearby town (do not fast-travel) and wait for the town name to appear on the screen
  3. Save the game
  4. Turn the game off
  5. Turn the game back on and return to the area where the Pokemon was caught to find an exact duplicate

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players can use this method to stockpile shiny Pokemon or simply get multiple of the same Pokemon that they want, though it's unlikely many will be utilizing this method much outside of collecting shiny Pokemon. There isn't much point to having multiple of the same Pokemon, but it's a trick that some players may still want to employ regardless.

As pointed out by Nintendo Everything, it's possible that the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet duplication glitch will be patched out in a future update. This may upset some fans who would rather Game Freak and Nintendo focus on fixing Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's performance issues with any updates they release for the game, but fans will just have to stay tuned for more information on what to expect from the games' future patches.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
