With many day-one players already finished with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, several are eager to see what is added via the Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC. Split into two parts, this content will see players travel to a Japanese festival in the village of Kitakami in the Teal Mask DLC, as well as the seabound Blueberry Academy in the Indigo Disk.

Of course, the DLC will also bring back plenty of Pokemon, introduce new Pokemon alongside legendaries like Ogerpon and Terapagos, and according to one rumor, change the Tera form mechanic in one way. In short, it seems some Pokemon will get a special Tera form akin to Mega Evolution, and this probably explains why there was no new Eeveelution form this gen or last gen at that.

Breaking The Pattern of Eeveelutions in Pokemon Games

At first, it would seem that Eevee's new evolutions follow a specific pattern, but it's entirely possible Game Freak is breaking from it. Kanto, of course, introduced Eevee and its first three evolutions: Jolteon, Flareon, and Vaporeon. Johto, Gen 2, followed that with new Eeveelutions in Umbreon and Espeon, but it wouldn't be until Gen 4 when two more were introduced: Glaceon and Leafeon. Once again, Gen 5 would not feature a new Eeveelution, but Gen 6 would be the introduction of Sylveon, the last proper Eeveelution to be added so far. At first, it would seem that Game Freak was adding a new form every two even gen after the first, but the lack of an Eeveelution in Gen 8 seems to counter that.

As a result, many fans were hoping to see a new Eeveelution in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, which didn't come to pass. There is another angle to consider, however. Pokemon Sword and Shield may not have added a new Eeveelution, but Eevee did get some attention in the form of a special Gigantamax form (versus a standard Dynamax). That hasn't happened with Tera yet, but it's probably the next half-step for Eevee.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC: Eevee is Likely to Get a Special Tera Form

Riddler Khu, a well-known leaker in the Pokemon community, recently alluded to a special new mechanic in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's DLC. In short, it would be like adding a Mega Evolution or special Gigantamax form to Tera Pokemon. Certain Pokemon when terastallized to a specific type (or something akin to that) will supposedly be getting a new form alongside that special typing. With this in mind, many have already noted how Charizard will likely receive a new Tera form, as this Pokemon is favored in every gimmick, but it's likely that Eevee will as well. It wouldn't make sense to add a new Eeveelution as well as a new form for the base Eevee, but it does make sense that the beloved critter gets some special attention.

Of course, if Game Freak is giving Eevee a new Tera form, it could be something really cool and mechanically better than a base form. It could be something like a new Ghost-type Eevee form, as swapping between Normal and Ghost-type would be fun, while something powerful like a Dragon-type Eevee would make plenty of sense. On the other hand, it could retain its Normal typing just like Gigantamax Eevee. If that's the case, then it would pose a serious question for the community whether Gimmick-based Eevees can hold a candle to proper Eeveelutions.

For now, this should all be taken with a grain of salt. It remains to be seen what the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC does with Eevee, if anything at all, but a new Tera form for Eevee does make sense in the grand scheme of things. Otherwise, fans may be kept on the line until Pokemon Gen 10 rolls around for anything at all.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available now for Nintendo Switch.
