The holiday season is wrapping up, and many Pokemon fans have either purchased the newest titles for themselves or have received Pokemon Scarlet and Violet as gifts. While those trainers are most likely making their way through the game for the next while, a new DLC announcement for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet from Game Freak could be released as early as next month.

Through leaks, players already have an idea as to what they can expect from the DLC accompanying Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. While some are speculation, such as believing the Ultra Beasts will come back through the Beast Ball being a Pokedex completion reward, others have quite a lot of evidence behind them. Due to the way the Paldea map has a strip of land that could be connected to Kalos, some fans think the beloved Gen 6 region will make a return somehow.

Kalos Returning in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is Great for Endgame Content

Considering that Scarlet and Violet are allegedly following Sword and Shield's DLC plans, it's perfectly reasonable to think that the next Pokemon expansion pass would be relatively the same size, if not bigger. Being able to explore old, familiar regions after a brand-new one was something fans adored in the original Gen 2 games and also in Pokemon Gold and Silver's remakes, and the idea of being able to do it again with Kalos sounds incredibly promising and exciting. It also serves as a great opportunity for Game Freak to bring back creatures that were once only found in the 3DS games.

This potential DLC is also well-timed as Pokemon X and Y celebrate their tenth anniversary in 2023. While the franchise hasn't made it a point to celebrate game anniversaries with in-game content too commonly in the past, much less at such a big scale as to potentially include another region in a new release, Scarlet and Violet break many long-standing traditions for the franchise across the board. When it comes to just how many aspects of Pokemon are left behind between generations, callbacks like these would be incredibly welcome by many.

Why Kalos in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Would be a Mixed Bag

As promising as the idea of exploring the Kalos region again sounds, it most likely won't pan out the way fans wish that it would. If one looks at the scope of the Isle of Armor or The Crown Tundra expansions, it's easier to assume that players will likely only get to explore the Paldea-Kalos border. This mountainous area seems redundant against the other locations in Paldea, so it might not be as impressive as fans imagine.

While the connection between Paldea and Kalos makes sense as both regions are based on real-world neighboring countries, Spain and France, some fans may feel left out by the sudden love for Gen 6. New Pokemon releases almost always act as teasers for the next game that's getting remade, and if previous trends are anything to go by, Pokemon Black and White remakes should be next. Instead, everything is pointing to Kalos, neglecting Gen 5 entirely.

In the end, the potential of Kalos DLC for Scarlet and Violet is almost nostalgic and exciting while it also tramples over even more series traditions after Scarlet and Violet broke plenty of them already. It remains to be seen if the additional content will be as expansive as including two regions in one game, or simply just another area to the game that fans have already seen before. The execution may make or break the return to Kalos for even the most diehard loyalists.

However, this is only if the fan theories and alleged leaks turn out to be true, as nothing is confirmed just yet. Even though Pokemon Sword and Shield revealed their DLC in January, there's a chance that there's still a bit of a wait ahead for Scarlet and Violet players before their expansion pack arrives. The DLC for Gen 9 could also build up the Paldea region rather than focus on its neighbor, Kalos. However, if the previous Pokemon Scarlet and Violet leaks that turned out to be right are anything to go by, an adventure in Kalos in some shape or form is most likely coming soon.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available now on Nintendo Switch.
