If there's one thing that's important when it comes to Pokemon training, it's knowing a Pokemon's IVs. The abbreviation "IVs" stands for Individual Values, and they determine a Pokemon's potential. For each stat, a Pokemon will have a determined amount of IVs between zero and 31. It's been this way for a long time, and this hasn't changed with the release of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet.

The higher the Pokemon's IVs, the higher their stats. Usually, players will look for Pokemon with perfect IVs (meaning six stats with 31 IVs) but depending on their strategy, they might also want zero IVs for a certain stat. Either way, knowing how to check a Pokemon's IVs is mandatory when building the perfect team and training for the competitive scene. Here's how to check IVs in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet.

How To Check IVs in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Unfortunately, it's not possible to check a Pokemon's IVs right at the start of the game. The IV checker is only unlocked after the player has beaten the Elite Four and has become the champion of the Paldea Region.

Once the player has defeated the Elite Four and seen the credits of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, they'll have to head to the nearest Pokemon Center. They have to talk to the receptionist at the Pokemon Center; she will add the Judge feature to the Party and Boxes menu.

To check a Pokemon's IVs, the player has to pause the game and go to Pokemon Boxes. Then, hover over the Pokemon they'd like to analyze and press the + Judge button to activate it.

Pokemon caught in the wild randomly most likely won't have amazing stats since these values are generated randomly. The easiest way to get a Pokemon with fantastic IVs is to participate in high star-ranked Tera Raid battles.

During Tera Raid battles, players will encounter Pokemon with a guarantee of a certain amount of max IVs. The number of a Pokemon's guaranteed maximum IVs in a Tera Raid battle is the number of the battle's star rank minus one; the remaining stats are calculated at random.

This means that a four-star Tera Raid battle will guarantee a Pokemon with three perfect IVs, for example. Six-star Tera Raid battles are the best place to catch perfect Ditto that can be used for breeding competitive Pokemon.

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet are available now for the Nintendo Switch.
