Three days after their official release, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet broke records in the UK as they became the second-biggest UK physical launch in the Pokemon franchise history and the biggest boxed game release of the year in the country. While the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet sales are already impressive, this data only reports on boxed game sales as Nintendo doesn’t share digital sales and download figures for their games.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are the latest entries in the Pokemon series. Both titles were released on November 18, 2022, introducing a variety of new Pokemon for trainers to capture in the open-world region of Paldea. Even though some players complained about performance issues with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, it didn’t stop the game from topping the sales charts in various countries.

The latest report on video game sales in the UK revealed that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are the most sold games for the week ending November 20, despite being released only two days prior to the end of this period. Their release is the biggest boxed game launch of the year, surpassing the sales of FIFA 23. It also marks the second-biggest UK physical launch in the franchise, behind 2016’s Pokemon Sun and Moon on the Nintendo 3DS.

Despite selling fewer units than Pokemon Sun and Moon, Scarlet and Violet generated more revenue due to a higher average selling price. The Violet version of the game accounted for 52% of sales, while 42% of players opted for the Scarlet version. The remaining 6% purchased the double pack, featuring both Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. The first week sales of the new generation of Pokemon games are 56% bigger than January’s Pokemon Legends: Arceus and 25% bigger than the previous generation, 2019’s Pokemon Sword and Shield.

The Pokemon Company has been teasing Pokemon Scarlet and Violet months before their launch with the reveal of new pocket monsters. This new generation brings several new Pokemon to capture, from the Diglett look-alike Wiglett to the legendary Koraidon and Miraidon, respectively on the covers of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. These creatures roam across the land of Paldea, a new open-world region inspired by Spain. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet also bring various new mechanics to the series, such as the ability to play with up to three other players and explore the world together or automatically send Pokemon to battle wild creatures and find useful items.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available on Nintendo Switch.
