Nintendo issues a statement in Japan confirming that there currently aren't any plans to release downloadable content for its upcoming Pokemon fighter, Pokken Tournament.

As one of the more anticipated games hitting Nintendo's Wii U console this year, Pokken Tournament has a lot of excitement surrounding its inevitable arrival. That's not all that surprising considering how long gamers have been waiting for a dedicated fighting game based around the Pokemon universe, but many are still awaiting any news on additional monsters that will be joining the fray. As of this writing, the roster for the game is sitting at 16 Pokemon, with ample room to grow, but at this point in time the Big N currently doesn't have plans to increase that number through DLC.

According to the long-running Pokemon fan site Serebii, Nintendo has made just such claims, alongside a handful of additional information about included assist beasts. Given the current roster size for Pokken Tournament (and how close the title is to launching) this information may be a little concerning for many, as a Pocket Monster fighter with minimal representation of the franchise's diverse line of characters would be incredibly disappointing to longtime fans – especially considering that there are two versions of Pikachu and Mewtwo occupying it.

While news that Pokken Tournament isn't currently scheduled to receive any sort of post-launch add-ons is odd, it shouldn't be viewed as a definitive answer from the house of Mario. The company has made similar claims pertaining to Super Smash Bros. in the past, and everyone knows how that turned out. With the new Nintendo NX platform on the horizon, however, support for the game may very well be limited, and it will all likely be determined in the wake of final sales for the title.

On the bright side, it has been confirmed that Cubone, Diglett, Magneton, Quagsire, Espeon, and Umbreon have all been added to Pokken Tournament as assist creatures. That presumably takes them out if the running for playable positions, which some may deem as a shame in the wake of such additions as Chandelure. Still, the more Pokemon included the better, although many are likely still hoping to see a number of additional fighters join the game at some point in the near future.
