With Detective Pikachu premiering in theaters in just over a week, new promotions for the project were bound to pop up. Now, a new Pokemon mobile app has been leaked by Target stores, and it's offering perks tied to the movie, as well as the game series.

The new app, entitled Pokemon Pass, has been revealed by signage found at a Target store. According to the sign, the new app will, at the very least, allow players to access special app-only Pokemon giveaways. At this time, one sign advertises that a QR code can be scanned with the app in order to unlock a special shiny Eevee in Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu, or a shiny Pikachu in Let's Go Eevee. Another sign offers a QR code that unlocks a digital sticker of Detective Pikachu's Psyduck. Both offers are stated to launch on May 11th, notably the day after Detective Pikachu hits theaters in the U.S.

At this time, the QR codes are broken, likely indicating that these signs were put out before they were meant to be. Since Nintendo and The Pokemon Company haven't yet announced the app, this will probably change in the very near future, once Detective Pikachu's release date draws closer. In any case, the app will be available for both Android and iOS devices at launch, but it remains to be seen if this offer will be available to Pokemon players outside of the United States.

Beyond these two promotions, exactly what purpose the app will serve remains a question. Pokemon Pass may offer a new take on prior promotions that saw Pokemon players heading to their local McDonalds or GameStop in order to download free Pokemon, as was the case with Pokemon Sun and Moon. This could potentially make it considerably easier for some players to download new Pokemon, especially if the upcoming Switch-exclusive Pokemon Sword and Shield continue the tradition.

Beyond the app, Pokemon fans have a lot to look forward to this year. If a recent Pokemon Sword and Shield leak is to be believed, a lot more information regarding the games will be coming soon. Eager fans will want to pick up the Pokemon Pass app once it becomes available, as there's a strong likelihood that promotions will be released for Pokemon Sword and Shield through the app as its release window approaches.
