Pokemon have a variety of origins, coming from the deep sea, underground caverns, and much more. Those who don't necessarily read the Pokedex while trying to "catch 'em all" will miss out on some fascinating origin stories, as many Pokemon have very fleshed-out backstories and places of origin.

With the mystery surrounding the existence of these creatures we know as "Pokemon," it shouldn't be surprising that some of these powerful creatures originated from space. Some are blatantly aliens, having their designs based on astrological concepts, and others have a backstory through the games and anime that point to their existence coming from beyond the ozone layer.

8 Sableye

Mega Sableye from Pokemon ORAS Cropped

Sableye is never explicitly stated to have come from space, but there are several design choices and story mechanics that point to the purple gem-loving creature being an alien. Sableye's design is rumored to have been inspired by the extraterrestrial Kelly-Hopkinsville encounter that happened in Kentucky in 1955. The witness of this encounter described these short aliens as having "large pointed ears, claw-like hands, eyes that glowed yellow and spindly legs," which matches Sableye's description very closely.

Not only does this design choice point to Sableye being an alien, but in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky/Darkness/Time, Palkia (the deity of space itself) summons a spatial rift that Sableye appears from.

7 Kyurem

Although it's revealed in Pokemon Black & White 2 that Kyurem is the being that was left over when Zekrom and Reshiram were formed, the original legend that it hails from hints at something extraterrestrial.

In the legend, a large meteor crashed beside Lacunosa Town, creating what's now known as the Giant Chasm. In this meteor was Kyurem, who had broken free from the rubble upon the meteor's impact with the Giant Chasm. The people of Lacunosa Town built a wall to keep out Kyurem, as they thought the icy dragon was eating the townspeople.

6 Staryu & Starmie

There is an abundance of design choices that lead people to believe that Staryu and Starmie originate from space. Even residents of the Pokemon world believe that these faceless, star-shaped creatures come from beyond the ozone layer.

Both creatures are gifted with impressive regenerative abilities and share the same chest gem as the Deoxys, a confirmed extraterrestrial Pokemon. Staryu is said to gather together at night to flash their red gems towards the stars, and Starmie can emit radio signals at night that seem to be communicating with something, or someone, beyond Earth.

5 Solrock & Lunatone

It's impossible to overlook the sun and moon-shaped Pokemon as potentially extraterrestrial beings. Solrock and Lunatone are both dubbed the meteorite Pokemon because they were first discovered by a meteor strike. Both creatures even draw their power from the sun and moon, respectively.

It's unclear whether Solrock and Lunatone are actually from either the sun or moon or if they're just meteorites themselves, but regardless it's safe to say that these two Pokemon are certainly extraterrestrial in one way or another.

4 Cleffa

Cleffa's evolution line, including Clefairy and Clefable, are all strongly associated with space, specifically the moon. Clefairy evolves into Clefable using the Moon Stone, and there is a myriad of details about Cleffa, as well as its evolution line, to suggest that there's a connection between these creatures and space.

Much like Clefairy, Cleffa is shaped vaguely like a star and they're often found near the site of a meteor strike. Cleffa, Clefairy, and Clefable all gather together on the nights of a full moon and under meteor showers to dance in a ring.

3 Eternatus

Eternatus mid-battle in Pokemon Sword & Shield

Eternatus is the ultra-powerful final boss of Pokemon Sword & Shield. As it is, Eternatus looks like something other-worldly, with its dragon-like appearance and skeletal exterior. Although the main plot of Pokemon Sword & Shield doesn't point much to Eternatus being from space, its backstory certainly does.

Years prior to the events of Pokemon Sword & Shield, Eternatus crashed to earth in a meteorite. Pieces from Eternatus' body broke off in the impact, becoming the Wishing Stars that allow Pokemon to Dynamax.

2 Deoxys

Deoxys might be one of the most well-known Pokemon that canonically come from space. Several pieces of the Pokemon anime and games point to Deoxys as being extraterrestrial, including the Delta Episode of Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire where players get to battle Deoxys in space while on the back of Rayquaza.

After a space virus was exposed to a laser beam, it mutated and came to life, becoming Deoxys. Deoxys is one of the few mythical Pokemon to canonically, without question, have origins in outer space.

1 Elgyem & Beeheyem

Beheeyem and Elgyem appearing separately in the Pokemon anime

Elgyem and its evolution, Beeheyem, certainly look, sound, and act like aliens. These two creatures' designs scream that their origins lie beyond Earth, and that much is true. Elgyem and Beeheyem are rumored to be linked to the site of a UFO crash that happened about 50 years prior to the events of Pokemon Black & White.

The behavior of both alien-like creatures seems to be based on conspiracy theories about aliens. Elgyem and Beeheyem can rewrite the memories of both people and Pokemon, and Elgyem emits a strange power that makes televisions display weird images when standing next to them.
