Logan Paul is a YouTube personality who is no stranger to controversy. Though many know Paul for his wild antics and fighting matches with legends like Floyd Mayweather, he has also revealed himself to be a big Pokemon fan. His love of Pokemon is not limited to the games, and he has also dropped lots of money on the collectible cards. According to Paul, his love for the series started during childhood, and although his attachment to it remains in adulthood, he is willing to admit that he may be a tad obsessed.

Thanks to his wealth, Paul has been able to grab some very rare cards to add to his collection, including one worth over $5 million. Not all his moves in the Pokemon card collecting world have been successful, and he has been a victim of a scam that cost him at least $3 million. Though people may have mixed opinions about Paul, it is hard to not be envious of his vast collection of cards.

Growing Up With Pokemon

Like many fans, Paul's love of Pokemon began at a young age. As he explained in an interview with podcast host and comedian Andrew Schulz, as a child he was drawn to Pokemon games due to their creativity and the interesting characters that players cross paths with. He has a special attachment to the first generation, and he revealed that every couple of years he will purchase a Game Boy Color along with either Pokemon Red or Pokemon Yellow, just so he can experience a bit of nostalgia. He also admitted that he is not too much of a fan of the Pokemon that fall outside the original 151.

Later in his life, Paul discovered the Pokemon Trading Card Game, and he grew obsessed with the cards as well. He is not afraid of publicly expressing his devotion to the series, though he is far from the only celebrity that has done so. Famously, singer Ed Sheeran has revealed that he is a huge fan and that he loves Squirtle. The Pokemon Company has acknowledged Sheeran and collaborated with him, and fans can expect his song Celestial to feature in the upcoming games, Scarlet and Violet.

Logan Paul's Pokemon Card Collection

Paul has spent exorbitant amounts of money on his Pokemon card collection, netting him some pretty rare cards that would make any collector jealous. His collection includes a first edition holographic Chansey, as well as a holographic Blastoise and Venusaur. One of the biggest highlights in his collection is a perfect condition Pikachu Illustrator card from 1998. It wasn't easy for him to get it, and he claims it took months of bargaining before he was able to obtain the coveted card for a little over $5 million. The deal was a record-breaking one, earning Paul a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The Pikachu Illustrator card Paul owns is the only mint condition one known to be in existence, and it is highly sought after because only a handful was handed out during a Pokemon illustration contest in the 90s. Paul typically stores the valuable card in a $80,000 custom pendant attached to a necklace with a Pokeball bail. Showing off the card, he wore the necklace during his appearance on WWE. While the purchase is impressive, it did annoy many fans who believe that their hobby has been turned into a marketplace and that it has become a playground for the rich who can simply buy every card they desire instead of going through the pains of collecting them normally.

Pikachu Illustrator is not the only covetable card in Paul's collection, however. In 2021, he was seen with a first-edition Charizard around his neck, and the card is estimated to cost at least a quarter million dollars. Though the Charizard is not holographic, collectors constantly seek out the first edition cards, along with the rest of the first edition Pokemon, which are hard to find in good condition. First edition cards like Mewtwo are also known to fetch a lot of money.

Not all of his card-collecting escapades have been successful, to his dismay. Perhaps the worst failure occurred in late 2021 when Paul spent three and a half million dollars on first edition Pokemon cards. Hardcore fans immediately started noticing red flags everywhere, ranging from Paul's seller being unknown, to the box and its packaging seeming a little off. Upon opening the package, Paul discovered that he had been duped and that he received near-worthless G.I. Joe cards. Although many found the incident to be hilarious, it did serve as a warning that the marketplace is full of scammers that will take advantage of those who don't do enough research before parting with their money.

Has Logan Paul's Pokemon Obsession Gone Too Far?

Despite a couple of blunders, Paul has yet to turn his back on Pokemon. His collection is large enough to spark the envy of any collector, and even he admits that he may have an obsession on his hands. Earlier this year, after showing some images of his massive collection, he admitted that he should probably get rid of some of them. Since then, Paul has auctioned off some Pokemon cards, making him a good profit from fans looking to get a piece of his collection.

Scarlet and Violet are set to release in November, taking gamers to Paldea where they will discover new critters and learn about a strange phenomenon known as Terrastalization. Players have gotten a glimpse of some new creatures the ninth generation will bring, including Wiglett and Fidough. New Pokemon card sets will be released in 2023, and the gorgeous legendary cards have already been revealed. It is a good time to be a fan of the franchise, whether one is interested in card-collecting or in jumping into the latest video game adventure.
