In the Pokemon franchise, shiny Pokemon are a coveted treasure. These incredibly rare variations of Pokemon offer no discernible value but players still love to collect them. Shinies have been around for several Pokemon games, including Pokemon GO and Pokemon Quest, and they will be back for Pokemon Let's Go.

During the recent NintendoVSUK event, attendees got some hands-on time with Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Pokemon Let's Go Eevee  and were offered the chance to catch a shiny for themselves. According to one report from the event, when Pokemon Let's Go players are walking around, shiny Pokemon will not be displayed any differently to their standard counterparts.

However, the game will make identifying shinies slighter easier. Shinies will be surrounded by "star-like particles" and players will only need to touch the Pokemon and catch it before it disappears. This means that, unlike in previous Pokemon games, shiny hunters will now be able to figure out if a Pokemon is worth their time before they try to catch it. And, although the preview event featured a demo version of Pokemon Let's Go, the shiny Pokemon feature is expected to make it into the full release.

It has already been confirmed that Pokemon Let's Go will allow players to transfer Pokemon from Pokemon GO, including shinies. With this change to how shinies are displayed, it could mean that players are able to amass much larger collections of shiny Pokemon than in previous titles.

Pokemon Let's Go also introduces several big changes to the series' core mechanics. For example, gym battles now have entry requirements, a controversial choice for the series. But where one change restricts player participation, this shiny change could have the opposite effect. By making shiny Pokemon easier to spot, will the rarity and cool factor wear off?

On the one hand, the change takes the guesswork out of catching shinies, something that could go over well with players frustrated by the time investment. On the other, some Pokemon players typically relish the challenge of finding a shiny Pokemon because it makes it even more exciting when they finally catch one. As such, any changes that seem to make finding shinies easier may not go down so well. It looks unlikely that the mechanic will change, though, meaning that shiny hunters will just have to get used to the idea.
