An artistically talented Pokemon fan is receiving attention online for their impressive rendition of classic Pokemon Omanyte created out of LEGO bricks. The Pokemon fandom is as creatively inclined a fanbase as they come, with the community regularly churning out headline-worthy artwork. While a wide variety of mediums are used, one of the most popular is LEGO, which is how the Omanyte was created - but with a bit of a twist.
One of the original 150 Pokemon from the very first generation, Omanyte is a dual-type Rock/Water Pokemon. Also being a Fossil Pokemon, Omanyte and its evolution Omastar are modeled after the real-world fossil of an Ammonite, a type of extinct ancient cephalopod mollusk. While an original Generation 1 Pokemon, it reportedly won't be appearing in the upcoming Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
The LEGO Omanyte sculpture artist, who has the handle of u/ThisOneJawn, has posted their art to a LEGO subreddit, where the image has quickly accrued upvotes in triple digits. The LEGO sculpture does well at capturing the essence of the creature; the coloring of both the shell and actual body are spot-on, the dimensions appear accurate, and the shell even retains its signature helix form. The one twist of this LEGO creation is that it technically isn't LEGO, but actually a digital rendering. The artwork is on r/DigitalLego, an entire subreddit dedicated to digital versions of LEGO builds.
The digital LEGO Omanyte sculpture seems to be popular with fans, with remarks like "WOW" populating the post's comments section. The comments section also continues the seemingly endless debate on whether Helix or Dome Fossils are superior. For those who may be unaware, the Helix Fossil is how Pokemon players revive/acquire Omanyte, while the Dome Fossil yields a Kabuto. There's been a longstanding debate on which is the better of the two Fossil Pokemon, with no clear victor recognized by the fandom at large.
While the LEGO Omanyte sculpture is certainly impressive, another Pokemon fan is also building something from the first generation, except on a much larger scale. A particularly dedicated fan is recreating the entire Kanto region, with a LEGO version of Kanto's Route 3 being the most recent addition. The artist has already built Routes 1 and 2, along with iconic locations like Pewter City. It's revealed that the project is a digital one, the same as the LEGO Omanyte, marking a growing niche art trend within the Pokemon fan community.
With the upcoming Pokemon Scarlet and Violet bound to have all-new Fossil Pokemon, there will likely be some new fan-favorite Pokemon fossils that get some LEGO fan art of their own - digital or not.
