Earlier today, The Pokemon Company released a strange and creepy new teaser to promote its upcoming Pokemon Legends: Arceus. In the form of new "found footage," the video shows some aspects of the area that players will explore in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Despite the game being set in a feudal era of the Pokemon world's timeline, the footage is taken from the perspective of a researcher exploring a snow-covered area of the Hisui region.

In the two-minute clip, a Pokemon researcher appears to be recording footage of the Hisui region, the location in which the game is set. The Pokemon Company says that the clip was found in the Canalave Library. The excited researcher recording the video appears to stumble across some wild Pokemon, and the footage is just clear enough to suggest that they might have been attacked towards the end perhaps to emphasize the newest gaming mechanic.

The video's quality is mostly static, with the character's voice cutting in and out. However, from what is visible/audible, the researcher discovers a group of Snorunts plotting along together. He then decides to enter a more foreboding area. From there, the researcher finds a new Pokemon, described as having "white fur on top its head and around its neck," that is also fluffy and has round yellow eyes. Unfortunately, fans don't get much more of a description, as the researcher is seemingly startled or attacked off-camera, leaving the camera on the ground.

This teaser is a clever way to hint at a new Pokemon, as opposed to following the tradition of a 24-hour stream that preceded Pokemon Sword and Shield that eventually revealed Galarian Ponyta. It's unclear whether this species is a brand new Pokemon, a regional variant, or a regional evolution of an existing Pokemon, however, the general consensus is the mystery pokemon is a Hisuian Arcanine. Fans have also noted that the found footage is a reminder of the stakes of Pokemon Legends: Arceus, a game in which trainers can actually be attacked and knocked out by wild Pokemon.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is a new style of Pokemon game set in a past era of the Pokemon world. The game is set in the Hisui region, the area that will eventually become known as the Sinnoh region. Players will be tasked to collect data for the region's first-ever Pokedex while investigating a mysterious phenomenon that is causing some Pokémon to go berserk. Notably, the game uses new catch and battle mechanics. Instead of a separate battle screen, players deploy their Pokemon on the "overworld" map to battle wild Pokemon. While the new Catching mechanic has players sneaking up to Pokemon instead of randomly encountering them in tall grass.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus will be released for Nintendo Switch on January 28, 2022.
