The Pokemon franchise has a wide array of spin-offs, but the most popular is likely the Pokemon anime, which began back in 1997 and is still airing today. Pokemon Journeys, the 23rd season of the anime, appears to be serving as a massive callback to some of the anime's most iconic moments. One Pokemon fan has used this as a jumping-off point to create their own tribute to the Pokemon anime through the years: they edited screenshots from Pokemon Journeys to look like they came from the original anime.

When the Pokemon anime began, it had a very simple premise: preteen protagonist Ash Ketchum has just received his first Pokemon, a bad-tempered Pikachu, and set out to explore the world of Pokemon. As the show continued, Ash caught a wide variety of Pokemon, traveled across the land, and made a lot of friends. Every few seasons, Ash would say goodbye to his Pokemon and most of his companions to move to a new region that had just been revealed in the Pokemon games.

Pokemon Journeys brought Ash back to Kanto and had him reconnect with many of his old friends. However, he was also given a new companion, Goh, who appears to represent the mobile juggernaut Pokemon GO. Twitter user YinyangGio14 redrew four expressive screenshots taken from Pokemon Journeys, most of which feature both Ash and Goh, as if they had been taken from the original anime series. The result highlights the differences in color, facial expressions, and design sensibilities between classic and modern anime.

The first screenshot shows Ash, Goh, and Pikachu studying their smartphones, while the second shows Ash, Pikachu, and Chloe watching Goh strike a fierce pose. The third shows Goh angrily demanding a sheepish Ash tell him who Gary Oak, Ash's original rival is, and the fourth depicts Cynthia standing dramatically in front of her Garchomp. All four screenshot redraws show clear art style differences, including more washed-out colors and somewhat stiffer posing. Goh's skin is made noticeably darker, Pikachu is a duller shade of yellow, and Chloe's hair is a bright pink-red rather than a subdued purple-red.

Perhaps the single most important difference between the Pokemon Journeys screenshots and the classic anime redraws is the overall aesthetic. Pokemon Journeys draws inspiration from the cute and streamlined art of modern anime and modern Pokemon. YinyangGio14's redraws draw inspiration from the original Pokemon anime, which had cartoony and expressive faces and more stilted body language. In the redraws, the positions of Pikachu and other Pokemon are often shifted, foreshortening is reduced, and hand movements are simplified.
