Grass-type Pokémon are some of the most beloved characters in the world of video games. Fire types have cooler and edgier designs, while Water types typically look more graceful. However, there's something about the cute and natural look many Grass types have that appeals to many fans.

The world of Pokémon is mysterious, and Grass types are no exception. Many live deep within forests that are too dangerous for humans to enter. Inside those dark places, the lives of Grass types go by unobserved by humankind. Maybe beneath the surface, their cute looks hide sinister intentions. With that in mind, let's look at ten of the strangest questions about Grass types that still don't have answers.

10 Bulbasaur

Bulbasaur is number one. Literally! They're listed as 001 in the national Pokédex. In the first Pokemon game Bulbasaur was one of three Pokemon the player could choose as their first partner. Since then Bulbasaur has appeared in almost every Pokémon title from the mainline games to the spin-offs.

In Pokémon Red and Blue Bulbasaur's description in the Pokédex mentions a strange seed being planted on it's back that grows alongside it. That plant is most likely the green bulb on its back. Who is planting it? Why are they planting it? The Pokédex is filled with bizarre details about the various creatures in the franchise and it was Bulbasaur that set the standard from the very beginning.

9 Chikorita

Gen II Grass-type Chikorita

While Chikorita may have been voted the most useless starter Pokémon by Japanese fans, they're still number one. At least in the Johto Pokédex. Many of Chikorita's Pokédex entries refer to how the leaf on its head can create a pleasing smell that can instantly relax anyone around it.

In the modern world, it is possible they could be used in spas to create a relaxing environment. However, its leaf's aroma could have a more ominous purpose. Perhaps they use it to lessen their prey's senses and make them more vulnerable. There could be murder behind those adorable eyes.

8 Celebi

Gen II Grass-type Celebi Floating

The mythical Mew made history in the first Pokémon game by being a secret pocket monster that was hidden within the game until the developers revealed it. Celebi continued the tradition by being a secret inclusion in the next games in the series.

Masamitsu Hidaka, a director on the Pokémon anime, said in an interview that Celebi was originally going to be in the show before it was decided Celebi would be the star of the fourth movie. Within the show, it was supposed to factor into a storyline about the mysterious GS Ball that no one had ever been able to open. Celebi was meant to be within the ball, but when it was decided Celebi would be the focus of the upcoming movie the storyline was dropped. In the anime, the GS Ball was never opened and the storyline went unresolved. The exact details of how Celebi's storyline was supposed to go in the anime still go unanswered.

7 Leafeon

leafeon anime

One of the many evolutions of Eevee, Leafeon is a Grass type that's been beloved by fans since its debut in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Like the other forms of Eevee, it resembles a dog but its differentiated by various leaf-like appendages.

In its Pokédex entry, it is stated that Leafeon doesn't like to engage in combat. The Pokémon series is about battling pocket monsters against each other. That makes it an odd detail to include on a possible member of a player's fighting team . Why don't Leafeon enjoy battling? Is it instinctual or is it tied to a traumatic memory? Either way, in a player's next Pokémon adventure it might be best to let Leafeon sit this one out.

6 Shaymin

Shaymin, similar to Celebi, is a secret legendary Pokémon that was hidden within the game until it was revealed by GameFreak. It can transform into a Sky Form (pictured above) when it is exposed to a Gracidea flower. When Shaymin isn't around the right flower it will be in its hedgehog-esque Land Form.

Unlike most other legendary Pokémon, there seems to be more than one Shaymin. At least in the anime. One of Ash's friends, Mallow, owned one before it set off to join a small pack of Shaymin. Why exactly there is more than one Shaymin has never been explained. Is it possible they were once a prosperous species before going mostly extinct?

5 Applin

Pokemon Sword and Shield Applin

Applin debuted recently in last year's Pokémon Sword and Shield. They are similar to hermit crabs since they make their home inside of an apple. It uses the fruit to hide from predators and as its primary food source. It better hope that none of its predators are fruit lovers.

It will evolve into either a Flapple or an Appletun if it is given a tart or sweet apple respectively.  The game never specifies why the type of apple determines its evolution. Maybe the specific chemicals within the fruit will eventually change the Applin's biology?

4 Rowlet

Rowlet captured Pokémon fans' hearts the moment it was revealed. The egg-shaped owl with a bow tie was just impossible to resist. Like Bulbasaur and Chikorita before it, Rowlet is the Grass type starter for its region.

It is well known for its preference for small spaces, such as its trainer's backpack where it will relax and even sleep. Rowlet's Pokédex entries state that it is a predatory bird. So why does it like to hide? Maybe its afraid of bigger predators.

3 Shiinotic

Shiinotic was first introduced in Pokemon Sun and Moon as a Grass and Fairy type Pokémon. In the most recent games, Sword and Shield, it can be caught in the Glimwood Tangle. This mushroom-like creature may not be the first Pokémon people think of when Grass types come up in conversation but that doesn't mean there aren't secrets associated with this beast.

One Pokédex entry states that forests Shiinotic occupy are dangerous. Especially once the sun goes down. Another mentions that their spores can make its targets sleepy. Once they fall asleep Shiinotic will devour its prey. Its specifically mentioned that Shiinotic tastes aren't limited to other Pokémon. It will eat humans too if the opportunity presents itself.  While many Pokémon are known to eat other Pokémon few are known to eat humans. What led to this blood-lust? Is it because humans taste good or is it in revenge for some past transgression on our part?

2 Cottonee

Cottonee is a Pokémon that was first spotted in the Unova region in Pokémon Black and White. It was originally a pure Grass type but once Fairy type was introduced in X and Y it became a Grass and Fairy type.  Its the weakest Grass type in the series with a base attack of only 27.

While many players might miss this, Cottonee's design looks somewhat similar to the head of a lamb. While this is obviously a choice made by the artists at GameFreak is it possible that there is an explanation within the Pokémon universe as well? Many animals and bugs evolve and adapt to look like other things in the real world. Is it possible Cottonee is doing the same thing?

1 Ludicolo

While many Pokémon seem shy or tame, Ludicolo always looks like its ready to party. Its first appearance was in Ruby and Sapphire and its most recent high-profile appearance was in the Detective Pikachu movie.

The Ludicolo in that movie was seen working at a diner alongside its trainer. In fact, many Pokémon in the movie are shown working various jobs. Are Pokémon paid for their services? If so, what do they spend their money on? They've been shown to have more sentience than animals in our world so they wouldn't be like the service animals we have.
