From Bulbasaur to Sceptile to Celebi, Grass-Type Pokemon have proven to be among the fan-favorite Pokemon types. Grass-Type Pokemon tend to represent nature in both its beautiful and dangerous sides. It's also one of the standard types used for starter Pokemon in every generation, along with Water and Fire.

However, pure Grass-Type Pokemon are surprisingly rare. Even Bulbasaur is a Grass and Poison-Type Pokemon instead of a pure Grass-Type. This leads to the inevitable question, what are the best pure Grass-Type Pokemon? That's the question we aim to answer today, by looking at the best pure Grass-Type Pokemon from every generation ranked by overall design.

8 Snivy (Generation V)

Pokemon Snivy in the anime

Snivy is the Grass-Type starter Pokemon from the Generation V games, Black, White, Black 2, and White 2. Known as the Grass Snake Pokemon, evolves into Servine at Level 17 and into Serperior at Level 36. Ash has his own one of these cute, mischievous Pokemon in the anime.

Incidentally, Serperior was once a heavy-hitter in online battling thanks to its Hidden Ability, Contrary. With this ability, if a move would lower Serperior's stats, it raises them instead. For example, Leaf Storm is a powerful Grass-Type move that Serperior can learn. Typically, it lowers the user's Special Attack stat, but thanks to Contrary, it raises Serperior's Special Attack instead. Yet, even this power can't overtake Snivy's cuteness. Unfortunately, Snivy and its evolutionary chain weren't included in Generation VIII.

7 Lurantis (Generation VII)

Pokemon Lurantis

Lurantis is the Bloom Sickle Pokemon and is native to the Alola region. It evolves from Fomantis at Level 34 during the daytime. Lurantis is a dangerous and slightly creepy-looking Pokemon, whose design draws inspiration from preying mantises. It's pretty darn cool, and that's what earns it the top spot of pure Grass-Types in Alola.

Funnily enough, like Serperior, Lurantis' Hidden Ability is Contrary, and it can learn Leaf Storm as an egg move through breeding. It learns several other powerful moves through level-up and TM as well.

6 Tangela (Generation I)

Tangela making an attack

Tangela is the Vine Pokemon and is actually the only pure Grass-Type of the original 151. Every other Grass-Type from Kanto is Grass and either Poison, Bug, or Psychic-Type. Despite that, Tangela is still one of the best Grass-Type designs from the region, and the mystery of what it looks like underneath all the vines is a big part of its appeal.

In Generation IV, Tangela was given an evolved form, Tangrowth. Tangela evolves into Tangrowth once it learns the move, Ancient Power. This method also evolves Piloswine into Mamoswine and Yanma into Yanmega.

5 Chikorita (Generation II)

Pokemon Chikorita

Chikorita is the starting Pokemon from Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, as well as the remakes HeartGold and SoulSilver. It's a cute and perky little Pokemon with a giant leaf on its head that can whip up winds or fire off smaller leaves. Ash had a Chikorita of his own in the Pokemon anime, which eventually evolved into a Bayleef.

Chikorita, aka the Leaf Pokemon, evolves into Bayleef at Level 16 and into Meganium at Level 32. Its evolutions pack a pretty big punch in Pokemon battles. Additionally, Chikorita is easily one of the cutest starter Pokemon designs into the entire franchise, so it easily earns a place on this list.

4 Rillaboom (Generation VIII)

Rillaboom in the Pokemon anime

Rillaboom is the final form of Generation VIII's Grass-Type starter Pokemon, Grookey. Known as the Drummer Pokemon, Rillaboom is based on large apes such as gorillas and orangutans. It evolves from Thwackey at Level 35, which evolves from Grookey at Level 32. It is a beastly Grass-Type Pokemon whose delightful design is reminiscent of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat.

Rillaboom has also made some waves in the current Pokemon competitive metagame thanks to its powerful Attack stat and its Hidden Ability, Grassy Surge. This ability automatically transforms the battlefield into Grassy Terrain once Rillaboom hits the battlefield, increasing the power of its Grass-type moves.

3 Gogoat (Generation VI)

Pokemon Gogoat

Gogoat is the Mount Pokemon and hails from the Kalos Region. It is a noble and stoic-looking goat Pokemon that looks like it could take down Pokemon three times its size. It's a simple yet fantastic visual design. Gogat evolves from Skiddo at Level 32.

To make things even better, Gogoat can somehow learn the Water-Type move Surf, allowing the player to ride it over water. It has a pair of killer Abilities to boot. The Sap Sipper ability allows Gogoat to absorb the damage of Grass-Type attacks to increass the power of its own Grass-Type attacks. Gogoat's Hidden Ability, Grassy Pelt, increases Gogoat's Defense stat when battling in grass or while Grassy Terrain is active.

2 Turtwig (Generation IV)

Pokemon Turtwig

Turtwig is the starting Grass-Type Pokemon from the Sinnoh Region. This Tiny Leaf Pokemon packs a mighty bite. It's also the only Grass-Type starter, outside of Bulbasaur, that's even cuter than Chikorita. Turtwig evolves into Grotle at Level 18, which evolves into the Grass/Ground-Type, Torterra, at Level 32. Turtwig's Hidden Ability, Shell Armor, is nothing to shrug at either; it prevents Turtwig from falling victim to critical hits.

Ash caught a Turtwig of his own in the Pokemon anime. It went on to evolve into Grotle and then Torterra, and fought many a tough battle for our beloved protagonist. Turtwig is also a favorite of the Sinnoh Gym Leader, Gardenia.

1 Sceptile (Generation III)

Pokemon Sceptile

All that said, Sceptile is the best pure Grass-Type Pokemon in all eight regions. Known as the Forest Pokemon, this intimidating and powerful Grass-Type can slash its opponents with the blades on its arms. Sceptile evolves from Grovyle at Level 36, which evolves from Treecko at Level 16. In the anime, Ash's Sceptile was a downright all-star for him, winning several battles.

With Generation VI and Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Sceptile and the other Generation III Hoenn Region starters each received a Mega Evolution form. Sceptile's transforms this Pokemon into a Grass and Dragon-Type.
