A new event is starting today in Pokemon GO. Thursday morning Niantic announced that it was partnering with the United Nations World Tourism Organization for the first Pokemon GO World Tourism Day event. Don't let the name fool you, though, because this World Tourism Day event will be lasting for a full week. Between today and Tuesday, October 1, participating Pokemon Go players will receive a number of bonuses and rewards.

Throughout the event, three specific bonuses will be applied to Pokemon GO players. In order to encourage Pokemon Go players to explore the world together, Niantic is decreasing the Stardust costs for trading. All trades will cost 1/4 less Stardust than normal for the event. In order to encourage Pokemon Go players to explore beyond their routine, spinning Photo Discs at PokeStops players have never visited will be worth 2x XP. And finally, to make the event special, there will be new themed Field Reseach tasks throughout the event.

In addition to the limited-time event, Niantic is also adding several features to Pokemon GO. These features include a new UNWTO t-shirt for players to show support with, the addition of Shiny Zangoose and Shiny Seviper in their respective regions, and the addition of Mime Jr. to the game. Mime Jr. is available solely in 5 km eggs in Europe, an can also be Shiny.

Speaking of eggs, Niantic is introducing a range of new region-limited Pokemon to be found solely in 5 km eggs. These Pokemon include Farfetch'd, Kangaskhan, Tauros, Heracross, Corsola, Volbeat, Illumise, Torkoal, Zangoose, Seviper, Lunatone, Solrock, Tropius, Relicanth, Pachirisu, Chatot, Pansage, Pansear, Panpour, Heatmor, Durant, and the new Mime Jr. Now, these Pokemon won't be available solely in the wild, providing a great opportunity for tourists to hatch a local Pokemon just by visiting and seeing the sights.

In all, Niantic is delivering an excellent themed event in celebration of World Tourism Day. One thing the Pokemon Go does excellently is to encourage players to get outside, journey, and expand their horizons. While in the grand scheme of things these new features and rewards are just small changes, Pokemon Go already does more than any other game to celebrate tourism. It's a fitting partnership for the United Nations, indeed.

Pokemon GO is available now on iOS and Android devices.
