Pokemon GO will soon be activating one of its biggest new features since launch. The new quest system, where players will complete research objectives for Professor Willow, will go live at some point later today. The quest system was teased to let players encounter "legendary Pokemon" out in the wild, but now we have a better idea of what exactly that may entail.

As spotted by Reddit user JK1504, in images reportedly taken from the Japanese Pokemon website, legendary Pokemon will mean more than just Mew. In fact, Pokemon GO players will also have the chance to encounter legendary Pokemon that were previously in the game, with the example shown being the first-generation flying/fire-type Moltres.

Presumably, this means that the other legendary birds are also a possibility for this new Pokemon GO research/quest system, meaning fans should once again have the opportunity to catch the likes of Zapdos and Articuno. Furthermore, one has to imagine that other legendary Pokemon besides the gen 1 birds will also be available, such as the second generation legendary dogs or Kyogre and Groudon from the third generation.

In order to have an encounter with a legendary Pokemon through this new system, players will need to earn seven stamps. Players earn stamps by completing daily objectives, such as catching a certain type of Pokemon or spinning a certain number of PokeStops. Once all seven stamps are earned, Professor Willow will have a "research breakthrough," that will include a surprise Pokemon encounter in addition to some helpful items and stardust.

One big upside to this new quest system is that it should give players in rural areas a better chance to catch legendary Pokemon that they may have missed out on. After all, it is extremely difficult, if not outright impossible, for many rural players to gather enough people together to participate in legendary raids on a regular basis, so this system will allow them to earn some of the rarer Pokemon in the game.

The new quest system should also be beneficial to those who already have all the legendary Pokemon in the game. It will give veteran players more tasks to complete besides just hatching eggs and catching Pokemon, plus it will give them the opportunity to catch at least one legendary Pokemon that hasn't been featured in raids - Mew. Mew's addition means that players should now be able to fully complete the Kanto Pokedex, which should be exciting news for hardcore players that already have almost every Pokemon in the game.

Pokemon GO is available now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
