The latest Pokemon GO update is arriving today and it doesn't introduce any new monsters, Battle Raids, and certainly not any trading functionality. Instead, the latest update solves a problem that some gamers have been worried about since the mobile AR title launched.

One of the options when creating a Pokemon GO account is to login with a Google email address. These kind of email addresses are permanent for the vast majority of Google users, but that's not the case for everyone. Many people receive their Google email account through school or work and lose access to it when they graduate or leave that job. As you can imagine, that's a pretty major problem for gamers who have spent hundreds of hours playing Pokemon GO on those accounts. Luckily, a workaround arrives in today's patch.

The solution that Niantic came up with involves linking your Pokemon GO account to your Facebook credentials. This solution doesn't work for players who don't use Facebook, but it is a viable option for many users. The patch started rolling out this morning and players are already testing out the new login feature.

"With this change, you will also be able to link your Trainer profile to your Facebook and Google accounts, and use any of those credentials to access Pokémon GO. For example, someone who currently logs in with Pokémon Trainer Club could link their Trainer profile to both their Google and Facebook accounts, and then they can use whichever account they prefer going forward. To link your Trainer profile to a Google or Facebook account, access the Settings menu and then select the platform you’d like to link.

Account linking is especially useful for someone who has registered for Pokémon GO using a Google Account that they may not be able to access in the future, such as one associated with a work or university email address. By linking their Facebook account, they can continue to make progress on their Pokédex, and even link a new Google account to their Trainer profile.

Please note: this feature will only be available to Trainers aged 13 and over."

Considering the rough time that Facebook is currently having in the news (concerning compromised privacy data), it seems like pretty bad timing for Niantic to roll out this big change. The company had already announced the account linking feature a few weeks ago, so perhaps the cat was just already out of the bag and it was too late to delay the patch. Either way, some users are sure to be relieved by the new option.

Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
